Focusing on Focus Groups

The 3 Main Types of Focus Groups

Elise Easterbrook
Focus groups are an important tool that helps manufacturers understand the consumer's buying habits and their reaction to specific products and/or services. Many work at home individuals participate in focus groups because it can be a fun and rewarding experience.

In a focus group, participants are chosen beforehand. These participants represent the target market for the product or service the company is testing. The size of a focus group varies depending on what is to be tested, but there is always a moderator present to ask questions and guide the discussions. The length of time of the session also varies. It can be as short as an hour or take several meetings to complete.

The 3 Main Types of Focus Groups

• Face to Face or Offline Focus Groups - In this type of focus group, the participant is asked to travel to a specific location also known as the focus group facility. Once there, he/she will be escorted into a room where other participants are also present. The moderator then presents the product or service, gives hand-outs and other pertinent information about it. The moderator then asks questions pertaining to the product or service in order to get the opinions and reactions of the participants. If you are chosen to take part in face to face focus groups remember to be punctual. Also, be honest with your opinions even if you feel your views are in disagreement with the majority.

• Off-site or Online Focus Groups - This type of focus group is conducted entirely online in real time. Participants are instructed to log into a secure network. Once there, they are asked to enter their opinions, share reactions and upload images and other data. If you are chosen to participate in online focus groups, make sure you synchronize the day and time to your time zone. Also, you have to have internet access, preferably Cable, DSL or faster since this will be conducted in real time. Of course, be honest with your opinions as this will help companies improve their products.

• Teleconference Focus Groups - In this type of focus group, participants are asked to call a toll-free number. Once connected, there will be a moderator who will ask questions. The participants are then expected to voice their views and opinions based on their experiences with the product or service. Again, adjust the day and time of the teleconference based on your time zone and don't be afraid to be heard. As a participant, you have the ability to help companies create better products and services that will benefit us all in the long run.

Important Things to Remember:

1. Focus group participants are compensated either with items, cash or both. Often, the company reimburses any incurred expenses such as travel expenses, long-distance telephone charges, etc. However, it is wise to always read the information or any related material given to you before joining or participating. This will ensure that you are aware of the rules and what is expected of you.

2. You don't need to pay in order to become a participant.

3. You won't get rich participating in focus groups. You will, however, be compensated for your time and participation.
