But recently, I decided I wanted to try some different flavors just to see how the Folgers flavor holds up. Claiming to be the best part of waking up is a claim I had never tested the company on before, and I figured it was time. But of course, I'm still on a budget. So I decided to pick up some Eight O' Clock coffee, in Hazelnut flavor, and give it a try.
Before I tell you which I like better and why, let me also say that we use whole bean coffee, a grinder, and a French press. So results based on ground coffee in a coffee maker might actually vary. I find that a French press really allows the coffee to come out with a fuller flavor, because the water and coffee steep together as opposed to brewing via a drip function. The press cleans easier than a coffee maker, is easy to use, and doesn't require any power either. So I figure I save a few cents on my electric bill every month, now onto the coffee comparison.
Eight O' Clock coffee walloped Folgers in my personal taste test. It was a landslide victory. The coffee itself was not nearly as bitter or acidic as Folgers. The Hazelnut flavor was sweet but not sugary. I also found that when I returned to making Folgers after the Eight O' Clock ran out; the Folgers had an almost ash-like taste to it. It seemed flavorless in compare.
As far as the price difference goes, Folgers is almost always cheaper. But they do last about the same amount of time, and the price difference is insignificant enough that it didn't really discourage me brom brand-switching all together. If you're the kind of person who doesn't care too much about flavor, there's absolutely no harm is sticking with your Folgers. It's not atrocious or anything; and it is nice to have an economically sound choice. But if you are having company over and plan on having coffee with dessert or you just want to try something new, I would highly recommend Eight O' Clock coffee in one of their flavors, especially the kind I tried, Hazelnut.
