Follow Up on Wikipedia--and My Own Apology

Michael Jackson Page Okay Now

Shortly after Michael Jackson's untimely death, I did a Wikipedia search that left me more that a little upset. I found that someone had altered information, describing Michael as an American child molester and making seriously racial remarks.

I was horrified, and went on a mad rant. I just couldn't believe that someone could do something so crude and hateful and get away with it.

Shortly thereafter, I revisited the site, and all had been rectified. Relieved, I abandoned my story and believed that I had deleted it. I did not think it would turn up published ten days later. I feel that I owe readers an apology for not being more careful in deleting the story, and that I must now follow up with good news of the corrected entry on Wikipedia.

I have no way of knowing if the "author" of the altered text was identified. I only know that I'm glad that it was discovered and corrected. He was an iconic musician and deserved much better than what I read that day.

Like many of us, I was deeply saddened by Michael's death. He was such a blessing to those of us who grew up watching him with his brothers and later as a solo act. He gave us reason to believe that we could all rise above it all and be successful. It was a joy to hear that sweet voice belt out a song.

Micheal's "Thriller" album was likely the first music my children remember listening to as toddlers. His music was something we could all agree on as they grew older and started listening to things I didn't really want to hear.

I hope that people can get past the hatefulness and remember him for the gift of music he's left us all.

Rest in peace, Michael
