A 911 call was received from a female employee of the store at 3:40 a.m. on Dec. 18 saying she was just robbed, Lieutenant Michael Spera from the Old Saybrook Police Department said.
After looking at surveillance footage, Spera said, the suspect is described as a black male, 5'8, wearing blue jeans, dark sneakers, and a dark colored coat.
Underneath his coat, he was wearing a light gray-colored sweatshirt with its hood over his head, Spear said, adding the suspect was wearing gloves and a partial black ski-mask.
"The suspect produced a handgun at the female store clerk and demanded cash in the register and she gave him the cash and he fled the scene," Spera said.
There were three employees working at the store during the robbery with the only employee behind the counter being the female who was robbed, Spera said.
The Old Saybrook Police Department gathered evidence from the scene and officers are currently processing the evidence and perusing leads.
Spera noted that interior and exterior cameras have been installed in the store after it was robbed on September 23, 2004 when 40-year-old Mark Randazzo, formerly of Middletown, was killed at gunpoint shortly before 3 a.m.
Randazzo had worked at Food Bag for several years and left behind an 8-year-old son.
Footage from these cameras should indicate whether the suspect fled on foot or by vehicle, Spera said.
Since then, Food Bag and its accompanying Citgo gas station with diesel fuel have undergone a major renovation.
Food Bag is the closest 24-hour convenience store to the Interstate 95 exit 66 interchange, near the intersection of Routes 1 and 166.
The store is located next to the Benny's Shopping Plaza.
Chief Edmund Mosca tasked members of the department to visit all businesses in town to "conduct security checks and an overview including proper placement of interior and exterior video surveillance," Spera said.
The department is encouraging all business owners to install surveillance technology especially at a time when such technology is affordable for small businesses.
Anyone who has information about the robbery is asked to call the Old Saybrook Police Department at 395-3142.
