Food Guide for Gluten-Free Diets

Foods to Avoid If You're Gluten-Free

Lyn Vaccaro

Those with gluten-free diets are often under the impression that if they avoid wheat they'll be fine, however that's not the case. There are in fact quite a list of other types of grains aside from wheat that can cause problems for people on gluten-free diets. Many times the problem comes from being processed with wheat, which is the case with other milled grains.

Milling Process

My own personal experience with other grains, namely oats hasn't been a positive one. Oats are most always milled in the same equipment that wheat is milled in. For me that has been a miserable experience because of the gluten reaction from the wheat dusted oats. For newbies just beginning their gluten free diets, this could prove to be a challenge that they find perplexing. They've thought over everything they've eaten and can't find a trace of gluten.

Here's a gluten free quick guide for beginners just embarking on their gluten free journey. It's paramount for those on gluten free diets to know which foods are unsafe for their condition.

  • Wheat Matzo
  • Graham Rye
  • Wheat Starch Mir
  • Wheat flour Semolina
  • Malt flavoring Bulghur
  • Triticale Barley
  • Spelt Durum

Label Reading

As tedious a task as label reading is, it's something that everyone on a gluten-free diet must learn to do meticulously. Those that are severely reactive to gluten will have to be particularly careful of the grains listed above to avoid any potential gluten reactions from them. Some of the foods listed below may also be a problem for gluten-free dieters and those that need to avoid gluten might want to think twice about before giving themselves the green light to eat these foods. At first glance they may seem harmless, but can cause considerable problems to those that are gluten-free eaters.

  • Breading
  • Broth
  • Soup base
  • Brown rice syrup
  • Candy
  • Croutons
  • Marinades
  • Pastas
  • Sauces and gravies
  • Self basting poultry
  • Soy sauce or soy solids
  • Playdough
