While I understand why you should never lie or exaggerate on a resume, I also do understand why someone like Irvine might feel the pressure to lie on a resume. I understand because I have felt the pressure, and have exaggerated on a resume before. Much like Robert Irvine did I have learned my lesson and I realize that getting a job based on my actual talents and experiences is better then lying about it.
When I was in my last few years of high school and when I was in college I worked as a print model, and I did several commercials. When going in for auditions I would always bring my resume with my previous experience and my training. Even though it doesn't make it right many actors and actresses exaggerate on their resumes. I exaggerated the acting classes that I took. While I did take dance classes, I also exaggerated the amount of dance classes that I took on my resume. The worst one was I exaggerated my previous singing experience. I had very little singing experience, and I had only ever taken a few singing lessons. I lied about this and I said that I had quite a bit of previous singing experience and that I had taken several singing classes.
I did learn my lesson. I was hired for part that I believed would have a small amount of singing. I wasn't worried because I knew I could handle a little singing. When I got to the set of the commercial I realized I might be in trouble, there was actually a much bigger singing part then I anticipated. I was worried but I figured all I could do was try my best, I actually still thought I would get away with it at this point. When they started filming the commercial it became obvious to everyone including the director that I was not as experienced as I had claimed to be. At first the director tried to help me out wit the situation. They had a vocal coach that was there, and they tried to have her help me get though it. Unfortunately it wasn't working work, and I was fired. I was devastated, I felt so embarrassed. I knew I wouldn't be working for that company ever again. It was such a horrible experience and it really showed me the bad side of lying on a resume. That situation deficiently taught me a lesson, I learned to never again lie on a resume.
