Food Pantries in Atlanta

Food Pantries in Atlanta

Atlanta is a large city with many social service agencies that offer aid to poor and low-income families. Food pantries are plentiful within the city of Atlanta limits, but you have to know where to find them, and you need to know their operating rules.

First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta

The First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta operates the Venable Food Pantry to low income families and the working poor who find themselves in emergency situations.

The church serves clients from all over the entire Atlanta metropolitan area, and their service days and times are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

There are no fees (there never usually are) and they will offer food assistance up to three times per family in a calendar year.

Feed The Hungry Foundation, Inc.

The Feed the Hungry Foundation offers a different type of food assistance program. They operate a food pantry, but it is mobile. They deliver food items to poor families at a set time, and there is no charge for their services.

The food is delivered on Saturdays, and applications for food assistance must be completed and turned in by Thursday in order to receive a delivery for the following Saturday.

There are no eligibility requirements, and they even assist people who are receiving food stamps, but who may have run out of their food stamp benefits (SNAP benefits) before the month comes to an end.

Applicants can receive a food package delivery once every three months, and the package generally consists of enough staple items to last an individual or family for a week.

Lee-Stelzer Heritage Research Museum, Inc.

While it may not seem like a fitting name for an organization that runs a food pantry, it is as such, and the Lee-Stelzer Heritage Research Museum has been operating a food assistance program in Atlanta for the past 31 years.

The program is operated by Dr. Lee Walker, an Atlanta resident who has given much of her time and energy to help the poor in her city. In the past, the program assisted anyone who needed food, but in recent years, the organization has shifted their focus to families with young children.

In order to receive assistance from the food pantry, applicants must have a child in the household who is under the age of five, does not receive WIC or food stamps, and does not reside in subsidized housing.

The Lee-Stelzer Heritage Research Museum food pantry is operated from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and prospective recipients should contact the United Way 211 Atlanta hotline to gain further program information.

Thanks for this information. It's sad that such services are necessary, but it's good to know that there are some good people who will stand up to help.
