Food Recalls for July 2010

Recalls Because of Samonella, E. Coli, Listeria Monocytogenes, Botulism and Allergens

July was a busy month for the Food and Drug Administration who reported recalls on food products all over the country. Many of the food recalls were made voluntarily by the company which produced the item. Several of the recalled food products have deadly side effects if ingested.

Food Recalls in July 2010
Spinach Temptations Baby Spinach 6oz Bags- sold in California, Washington and Arizona through Ready Pac Foods, Inc. The bags with the use by date of July 4th and July 8th were recalled voluntarily by Ready Pac Foods after a random sampling by the FDA tested positive for E. coli. No illnesses have been reported.

Señor Mexicano™ Avocado Pulp- recalled by J. Hellman's Frozen Foods, Inc. that were distributed to Hawaii and California because the 2lb bags had the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

Miravalle Chile California & Miravalle Chile Nuevo Mexico Brand Peppers- recalled for possible contamination of Samonella. These peppers were delivered to customers in CA, CO, UT, NC, NE, ID, OR and NV in 3oz, 6oz, 8oz, 16oz and 25lb bulk packages.

Simply Fresh Fruit and Miller's Ale House Sliced Apples- recalled by Marjon Specialty Foods, Inc for fear of contamination by Listeria monocytongenes. The apples come packaged in 2oz bags and were distributed in Florida. 119 cases were recalled.

QFC Broccoli Raisin Salad- recalled by Quality Food Center stores in Washington and Oregon for an undeclared allergen. The product failed to mention that it contained walnuts. Those allergic to walnuts could have serious and life-threatening reaction from the consumption of this product. The salad was available through the deli counter in 1lb packages.

Diamond USA, Inc. Dry Apricot Roll- recalled for undeclared sulfite allergen. Product was distributed in 1lb packages to retail stores in New York, New Jersey, Virginia and California.

Fresh Express Romaine Salads- products with use by dates of July 8th through July 12th were recalled by Fresh Express because of the potential for E. coli contamination. Products were distributed throughout the U.S.

Hafia Brand Schmaltz Herring- recalled by D&M Smoked Fish, Inc. because the product was found to be uneviscerated. New York State Agricultural and Market Foods inspector found that the product was improperly eviscerated before processing which is prohibited under New York State Agricultural and Market Foods regulations. According to the press release, "Uneviscerated fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning."

DeBoles® Kids Only! Gluten Free Tubettini Corn Pasta- recalled by DeBoles Nutritional Foods, Inc. due to an undeclared allergen that the alphabet pasta make contain whole wheat. This recall only effects 8.5oz boxes with the upc code 087336638305.

Denali Bear Claw Ice Cream- recalled by Oregon Ice Cream Company, LLC because of undeclared peanuts in the product. 641 tubs of the 3 gallon containers were recalled because of this undeclared allergen. People with peanut allergies who consume this ice cream may have serious and life-threatening consequences. Products were distributed to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada, Montana, Alaska and Arizona.

All Raquel's Products- recalled by Quong Hop & Co. because of possible contamination by Listeria monocytogenes. Raquel's food items include hummus, salads, wraps, sandwiches and other food products.

Specialty Farms Organic Alfalfa Sprouts and Organic Sprout Salad- recalled by Specialty Farms LLC because of possible contamination from Listeria monocytogenes. Products were distributed throughout the Northeastern U.S. to Price Chopper and Cooseman's NY (distributor).

Corn and Poblano Peppers- Pasco Processing, LLC recalled items with SKU 10071179017738 because of possible contamination from Listeria monocytogenes. 2,087 case of 20lb bulk packaged corn and poblano peppers have been recalled. The product was distributed to California, Arizona and Nevada.
