Food Review: Lay's Cool Guacamole

Michael Kaye
Packaging -
It was probably the packaging along with the title that drew me to this interesting find. Being that the flavor is guacamole, the bag is a "avaocado green." There is a picture of an avocado and a tomato on the bottom portion of the bag. There is also one of those bowls that I've seen them use at "El Torito" when they make the guacamole at your table. The name of it escapes me at the moment. The bag is a nice size, although with Lay's you always seem to get more empty space then chips. That reminds me, whenever your shopping for chips at your grocery store, never get the store brand. Those are about 75% air, 25% chips.

Size of Actual Product -
Depending on how well you bag of chips were handled, determines what size your chips will be. Luckily I seemed to have got one that had a nice ride to the convenience store shelf so I had nice sized chips. I always liked the size of a lay potato chip. There never too big, so I have no trouble eating one in just one bite.
Color -
I was kind of surprised when I opened to bad of chips to discover green chips with specks of red. From appearance I wasn't too please with the look of the chip. Whenever I see something green I instantly think this has gotta be vegetable flavor. I don't like thinking that when I dive into a bowl of unhealthy chips. Is avocado a vegetable or a fruit? After I admired the chip color for a while, I got used to it and decided that the reason I was thrown by the color was because I have never see a green chip before. I wonder how I reacted when I saw the first orange cheese flavored chip?

Smell -
They smell spicy, more like salsa then avocado. I didn't really find the smell intoxicating, but I didn't find it repulsive either.

Taste -
My friends, I think that Lay's has struck gold. The moment I put the chip in my mouth I got the spicy sensation of salsa. Then I was taken away to the land of guacamole. The salsa subsided, and the coolness of the avocado set in. When the chip was gone, I was left with the pleasant after tatse of a great chip. I really felt like I had just eaten a chip dipped into guacamole.

Consumption Tips -
Lay's can be a tricky chip to eat. I must warn you, make sure you chew the entire chip before swallowing. I sometimes don't, and then when I swallow a pointy part of the chip starts cutting it's way down my throat. I don't know if you have ever had that experience, but believe you me it is no picnic in chip land. Luckily, with the bag of chips I ate for this review I had no problems.

Fun Fact -
During the early 19th century, fried potatoes steadily gained in popularity. They became a common menu item at restaurants across the country. In 1853, a diner at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., ordered the fried potatoes with his meal. The diner, rumored to have been Cornelius Vanderbilt, sent the potatoes back to the kitchen with a complaint that they were not crispy enough. The chef at the restaurant, George Crum, apparently was furious with the criticism. So he sliced the potatoes paper-thin, salted them heavily and refried them. Ironically, instead of ruining the meal for the diner, Crum's creation was a hit with the patron.

I am pissed off I haven't seen these since 2004ish either. Damn people at Lays teased me and then left me hangin' I'd give up my dog for a bag.

I second the notion Keri, but unfortunately I haven't seen these chips since 2004. If you find them around let us know!
