Food Reviews: Organic: ShopRite Tomato Ketchup Vs Wegmans Ketchup

T. H. Pankey
A couple of weeks ago I did a food review on Wegmans Organic Tomato Ketchup, found here, which turned out to be a great review, in that not only does the ketchup Wegmans is putting its private label on taste great but a 24 ounce container of Wegmans Organic Ketchup costs the same as a 24 ounce container of non-organic tomato ketchup by Heinz. Well, that bottle of ketchup is gone and I found a bottle of ShopRite Organic Tomato Ketchup last time I made groceries that I'm now going to compare to Wegmans Organic Tomato Ketchup. Perhaps, between the two food reviews one of the two ketchups will turn out to be the better squeeze.

Food Reviews: Organic: ShopRite Tomato Ketchup Vs Wegmans Ketchup ( Taste )

What a strain it would be for ShopRite private label organic tomato ketchup to taste half as good as Wegmans private label organic tomato ketchup; though, you can put it on your to buy list, since it was nearly as good as Wegmans brand. The only perceptible differences between the two organic ketchups is ShopRite ketchup is a tad bit sweeter, but not nearly as sweet as the ketchup from the ketchup giants: Heinz, Hunts, Del Monte or many other brands of ketchup. Too, it was a tad more vinegary to the taste, once again not at all off-putting like some vinegarish ketchups.

Food Reviews: Organic: ShopRite Tomato Ketchup Vs Wegmans Ketchup ( Ingredients )

ShopRite Organic Tomato Ketchup Ingredients: organic tomato purée, organic sugar, organic white vinegar, salt, organic onion powder, and organic spices

Wegmans Organic Tomato Ketchup Ingredients: organic tomato purée, organic sugar, organic white vinegar, salt, organic onion powder, organic spices

You'll notice the ingredients and the order in which they are listed is exactly the same for each ketchup. Of course, that doesn't mean they'll taste the same, again they didn't.

Food Reviews: Organic: ShopRite Tomato Ketchup Vs Wegmans Ketchup ( Price & Conclusion )

As I pointed out in my previous review of Wegmans Organic Tomato Ketchup, or if you hadn't already known, Wegmans commands higher prices than ShopRite on almost everything.

Just to give you a little background on the two stores, which is telling inasmuch why Wegmans is usually more expensive than ShopRite: Wegmans is a privately-owned company consisting of about 75 stores, whereas ShopRite is the largest retailer-owned co-op chain of grocery stores in the United States, as well as the largest employer in the state of New Jersey. Additionally, ShopRite employs persons throughout New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Hence, some of the why the difference in prices between the two grocery stores.

ShopRite Organic Tomato Ketchup costs $2.49 for 24 ounces; Wegmans Organic Tomato Ketchup costs $2.69 for 24 ounces. That works out to about .10 cents and .11 cents per ounce, respectively. And again, as stated in my stand-alone review of Wegmans Organic Tomato Ketchup, Wegmans is the same price, and as seen here ShopRite is even cheaper per ounce as non-organic ketchup, when buying a 20-ounce container from Heinz.

Now, would I pay the extra .20 cents for the slightly better-tasting ketchup on which Wegmans puts its name over the ShopRite brand of organic tomato ketchup? Maybe, maybe not, there's a number of factors involved. However, I will say, don't let me have a coupon, even for one of the two ketchups of these last two food reviews. Coupons get my attention and get used, even on food such as ketchup. Look for these two ketchups if they're available in your area: they're nearly, equally as good in a taste comparison. If these two ketchups aren't in your area, compare the prices of non-organic and organic tomato ketchups wherever you shop for your groceries. You just may find you can pay the same price or even less for a better-for-you and better-tasting organic ketchup!
