Food Snack Review: Old Dutch Cheesy Jalapeño Puffcorn

Tina Twito
Old Dutch is a regional snack company located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. They make many varieties of tasty munchies at reasonable prices. (I love their dill pickle potato chips!) Last Friday, my husband came across "Old Dutch Cheesy Jalapeño Puffcorn" in the snack aisle at Hy-Vee. I had tried other varieties of their puffcorn before and liked them, and I like spicy and cheesy snacks, so this seemed like a sure winner. So I had him pick up a bag for us to try.

"Old Dutch Cheesy Jalapeño Puffcorn" comes in bright green bag topped with red and blue. It is adorned with Old Dutch's windmill logo and a picture of jalapeño peppers and cheese. The bag we bought cost us $2.00 for 6 ounces. This doesn't sound like much, but puffcorn is a very lightweight product. There are 5 two and a half cup servings per bag, so it's not a bad deal.

The ingredient list made "Old Dutch Cheesy Jalapeño Puffcorn" sound even more enticing. Among the other ingredients are onion powder, jalapeño pepper, green bell pepper, garlic powder, paprika, cheddar cheese, and blue cheese. (If you don't like blue cheese, don't worry, this doesn't taste like blue cheese dressing. You'd be surprised how many cheesy snacks have blue cheese in them.) This sounded like it would be a flavorful treat.

"Old Dutch Cheesy Jalapeño Puffcorn" is quite good. It's salty and spicy and a little bit sweet. My daughter said it wasn't hot enough for her taste, and I agree that it could have used a bit more kick. The jalapeño flavor really came through though. The cheese flavor in "Old Dutch Cheesy Jalapeño Puffcorn" is less mellow than their regular cheesy puffcorn, and the sharper flavor complimented the jalapeño well. The puffcorn itself was very good. If you have never had puffcorn, it is shaped like popcorn, and tastes quite a bit like popcorn, but has a melt in your mouth texture.

"Old Dutch Cheesy Jalapeño Puffcorn" is not a very healthy food. It does give you six percent of your daily recommended intake of vitamin A, four percent of your daily recommended intake of vitamin C, fifteen percent of your daily recommended intake of calcium, two percent of your daily recommended intake of iron, and three percent of your daily recommended intake of dietary fiber, but it also has 12 percent of your fat in it's 150 calories. So this is definitely an indulgence food.

So, if you are looking for a salty treat or just something a little different, I recommend "Old Dutch Cheesy Jalapeño Puffcorn".

Enjoy!

Definitely sounds good. The salty, spicy combo is very appealing, but as your closing paragraph reminds us, it's probably best as a treat! Thanks
