Food Stamp Changes Proposed for New York City: Will Other States Follow?
When it comes to food stamps others have gone as far as to state no beverages containing additional sweeteners should be allowed to be purchased with the benefit card that has replaced food stamps. Others feel consumers should make the decisions they feel are the right choice for them.
Food stamps were introduced in 1964 in an effort to assist families having difficulties purchasing food. Since that time there have been many changes and many critics of the food stamp program.
Some have stated they would go one better than Mayor Bloomberg if given the chance to change some of the food stamp rules. Removing soda and artificially sweetened juices would be just the beginning. Junk foods and boxed items needing little preparation were all on the list of items that would not be allowed by most sharing their thoughts.
This writer spoke with one person receiving just $16.00 each month in food stamps for her family of three. She felt people should buy fruits and vegetables and other foods that are a better choice. However, some willing to offer an opinion thought it was not the business of anyone other than the recipient of food stamps to make a choice.
As the employment situation in the United States continues to look bleak for many, more will no doubt be eligible for assistance. Currently there are more than 40 million people using food stamps.
According to the Christian Science Monitor, states have attempted to get restrictions approved previously. No restrictions have ever been applied because of nutritional values.
