Food Stamps for Fast Food

Fighting Obesity

MJ Wright

One of the big things out there is food stamps, or SNAP benefits, paying for fast food. A few states allow it, but will it come here to Florida? Do we really want or need it? I for one would not vote for it. There are a vast amount of stores that accept it and I see more and more convenient stores, and/or gas stations accepting it.

You can buy cold burgers, burritos, hotdogs, sandwiches and other things in almost any convenience store. All you have to do is put it in the stores microwave. Very simple.

Grocery stores have even gone as far as cooking the chicken that they put in boxes and keep warm, and then put them in the fridge so that customers can buy it with food stamps or SNAP benefits -- it's still pre-cooked. As long as it is not hot, you can buy it.

It is going around that it would be easier for homeless people to eat if their benefits were accepted at fast food restaurant's due to lack of food prep and cooking areas. Hello people... I told you that you can buy prepared foods and heat them up in that same stores' microwave. These are nothing more than excuses and selfish tactics of greedy business owners who want a piece of the American governments' funding; they don't care about the wellbeing of the people.

We don't need the poor buying unhealthy food. Unhealthy food is cheaper, that is why the poor have the highest percentage of the obese population now. Leave the sodas, snacks, and other junk food that is already paid for; most people eat that stuff anyway. It is the main meals and portion size that is the biggest problem.

If it is passed that food stamp and SNAP recipients get to buy fast food here (or anywhere) there will be a significant decline in the grocery store chains; there will be a significant growth in obesity and defeating the purpose of fighting it.

It comes down to choice. Even poor people have the choice to buy pizza every night or to buy chicken, fish, or roast beef. Choice is number one, but if you don't have the money to eat healthy, you will get the cheap, unhealthy foods to compensate. Don't give food stamp and SNAP recipients the added temptation to eat worse foods. Just say NO.

Is it easier said than done? Do you think it's easier for me to say? I speak from experience. I have been a food stamp recipient, with 3 children. Yes, sometimes it is easier said, but it can be done. My kids don't get sodas often and I stay away from fried foods. My kids get snacks and desert daily and still are a healthy weight -- portion size. There are plenty of junk foods, meals and snacks, to buy -- don't let fast food restaurants become added to the list. Keep the healthy fight going!

Healthy people = less pain; healthy people = less medical expenses!
