Food That's Good: "DOWN to the BONE"

A Restaurant Review

DOWN TO THE BONE
Neighborhood: University Area
Charlotte, NC 28262
United States of America
There is an expression that goes a little something like this; "that food was sooo good, I ate it down to the bone." So, in an age of chain restaurants and bad customer service, it is refreshing to find a place that offers great food and friendly service. One such restaurant is located in Charlotte, NC and it truly offers a combination of great food and service!

I've been holding out on this one for a while because hey, I didn't want y'all crowding the place and forcing me to the back of the line. But, I've thought about it and realize that we've been friends for sometime now, so, I'll go ahead and pass this favorite spot along to you. But first, a little background on this truly inspired restaurant.

Tom & Linda Hamilton moved to Charlotte from St. Albans, NY after some futile attempts at opening up a place in NYC. Tom says that the circumstances are "way too many to get into," but honey, I'll just say that whatever their reason for relocation, I'm glad they're in the Queen City. The final product from this husband & wife team is a wonderful establishment created based upon Linda's childhood dream. The restaurant has been featured in the Charlotte Observer, and is frequented by everyone from Comedian Cedric the Entertainer to Charlotte's own Mayor Pat McCrory. Co-Owner Tom, revealed that after R&B Group New Edition (NE) stopped by, Member Michael Bevins began talks of opening one in his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts.

If I've got you salivating, welcome to "Down to the Bone," with a tagline that reads "mouth H20ing food for the soul." Certainly a great choice as it describes the taste and aromas that make these down home favorites in high demand. First, the rules of engagement at DTTB... I'd recommend that you place your orders over the phone if you don't want to wait in line. Also, dishes do rotate daily so calling ahead is also advisable to see what Linda's got cookin. ' My final morsel of information; all dinners are served with 2 sides and a choice of corn bread or biscuit. According to Tom, the demand for their culinary fare has been so steady that they have answered customer requests and are now open on Sundays from 12:30pm-7:30pm. They used to close on Sunday & Monday but I guess when your food is that good, you gotta give the folks what they want...now that's what I call customer service!

Here's a quick sampling of what's on the Menu at "Down To The Bone."
Turkey Wings, Catfish, Flounder, Pork Chops, Beef Short Ribs, Beef Brisket w/Gravy and Soul Sides that include Macaroni and Cheese, Candied Yams, Black Eyed Peas, Okra, Turnip greens and oh, I have got to stop 'cause my mouth's watering as we speak!

Any who, you can check them out in the University Area in Charlotte at 7945 N. Tryon Street. Stop by Tuesday -Thursday: 11am-8pm, Friday:11am-9:30pm, Saturday: 12pm-9:30 and of course, Sundays as previously stated.

Down To The Bone lives up to it's name so, I'd suggest you check 'em out... 'cause if you don't get there, I sure will (searching for phone number), I'm about to call 'em now (dialing) 704-548-1616.

Check you later...I've got a pick-up to make!

Excellent piece! Thank you for it. I lived in Charlotte during the 1970s and had some excellent food at McDonald's Cafeteria the Coffee Cup and a couple of other places in the Queen City. I will plan a train trip there soon to check out Down to the Bone. That will be a great weekend--a good train ride, which I love; and outstanding food. Thanks for the heads up

This picture alone makes me hungry and I'm a VEGETARIAN. Dammit man, I guess I'll go to the vending machine to get a quick fix.

Saba, this is a small world. I was just yesterday reading a restaurant critics rant on how many of our best restaurants in Gauteng are closing as a result of the so called "Cafe society" we have become. I love a good restaurant were food takes time because they ain't just microwaving it warm.
    Great article.
