Food for Thought: A Subtle Form of Treason?

Politics is a Nasty Business

John Mario

Let's create a fictional scenario.

Suppose Mr X and his cohorts owned numerous international corporations. They wanted to ruin the US. Mr X and the other corporate leaders conspired to deliberately caused the downfall of all their corporations. Assume they were successful. Consequently our economy hit a depression and we defaulted on our national debt.

Assuming the Justice Department had ample evidence that this was a deliberate, successful attempt to sabotage the US economy, Mr X and his cohorts would be charged with treason. He would be labeled a traitor by the US government and by the American public.

Now I ask the reader a question. Does it matter whether a number of corporations committed this act or our Congress members committed this act?

The radical Republicans in Congress advocated defaulting on our national debt payment; an action Jon Huntsman labeled as 'crazy' during the IOWA political debates and afterwards. The attempt to ruin our nation is not simply a political act. It reeks of treason.

Why didn't our Congress, our Justice Department and our CIA recognize the attempt of a handful of radical Republicans to gut our economy in order to win the 2012 elections as an act of treason? Does it matter who commits or conspires to commit an act that would ruin our nation?

Are we that blind to subtle acts of treason? Are we willing to leave these untrustworthy politicians in public office? Are we willing to let one of these fanatics become our President? How could we trust this politician? How could we place our trust in anybody who deliberately attempts or advocates the destruction of our economy and consequently our nation?

I don't trust any of these political conspirators in any public office. Frankly, I think they are ruthless and unworthy of any public office. I think they deliberately acted in their own selfish political interests instead of in the best interests of our nation.

All Americans should judge these radical politicians the same as they judge any other person in our history who committed an act against our nation. It doesn't matter whether that person did it during war or during peace. It doesn't matter why the person did it. In my opinion, it is still treason and the people who commit these acts should be treated as traitors.
