Foods that Actually Make You Hungrier

Abby Willow
Who knew that you could actually eat foods that really make you feel hungrier? Frustrating but true, there are actually foods out there that will leave you feeling even hungrier than before you began eating. Find out what foods you should be avoiding when you feel like you're starving, and which snacks to go for instead.

You can actually be getting off to a terrible start in the morning when you pull out that processed, sugary cereal (yes, even if it's granola). Aside adding tons of calories and sugar to your diet, these foods are high-carb and quickly burnt energy, which means you'll be even hungrier as you head out the door. A better option is whole grain cereal or toast, an apple,or some oatmeal. You want filling foods rather than hunger-trigger foods, which means no sugary breakfast. Sorry, Pop tarts.

For the same reason, you should be avoiding those donuts, pastries, and quick-fix snacks, since they will give you a sugar rush and then crash which will leave you feeling hungrier than ever. And salty snacks, like potato chips and french fries, are no better either. These snacks trigger that food addiction feeling of needing more, so you'll continue snacking on these salty, oily treats because they make you feel good, but they will never fill you up.

A better solution for snacking? Choose a trail mix, or any piece of fruit for a sweet snack. In a salty mood? Then cheese and crackers will give you a quick fix and actually fill you up. You can't go wrong with peanut butter, either. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich can satisfy both your sweet tooth and your salty craving all at once without leaving your stomach growling for more!

There are even meals that can leave you hungry for more- and if you guessed Chinese food as a culprit, then you're right on the money. There's a reason Chinese food servings are so massive- they don't leave you full for very long. MSG, a flavor enhancer common in Chinese food, actually encourages hunger, so you'll be hungrier than ever even after you eat. Your better bet? Make your own Chinese food, MSG-free, and feel fuller and healthier to boot!

Other foods that can keep you full include low-fat meats, like steak. Even adding an egg to your daily breakfast can keep you fuller for hours at a time. Choosing a great protein at the start of the day (peanut butter or other nuts, avocado, or a lean meat) can help you feel fuller for greater parts of the day so you're more likely to avoid those hunger-inducing foods that really do nothing for you at all.
