Foods You Should Avoid on a First Date

David Christopher
If you are looking to impress a new flame, watch what you eat...especially if you are someone who loves to eat. If you are, like me, one of those people who agonize over every menu and who has half decided what you have a taste for for tomorrow's dinner, then your zeal for food may inadvertently lead you to make a selection that has serious ramifications for your date. Here are a number of foods that you should avoid ordering, specifically on a first date.

Spicy foods

Avoid anything that may mess with your breath. Water and mints may not cut it once you have downed a plate of Szechuan shrimp or polished off the jalapenos that came with your enchilada. This will ruin any hope you may have had for an end-of-the-evening kiss...and possibly a second date.

Family size...anything

It may impress your friends that you can eat an entire extra large pizza pie in one sitting. But it is not too likely to impress your date, unless s/he is an eating contest champion. You do not want to be in the position where s/he is long since finished and is watching you chow down on another pound of food, thinking you are a heart attack risk, and hoping your meal will not end up all over the inside of the cab or car later on that night.

Messy foods

In the case of spaghetti, linguini, or other noodle dishes, many people simply do not know how to eat them properly. Even those that do may wind up flicking sauce in multiple directions. It is best to avoid things that may wind up on your date.

It is also best to avoid things that may wind up on you. Soups and messy sandwiches, such as meatball heroes or Sloppy Joes, can cause you not only significant embarrassment at the dinner table, but also a hefty dry cleaning bill thereafter.

Bean Dishes/Carbonated Beverages

Avoid these like the plague. Belching and flatulation are not the best conversation starters, even when politely excused; in fact, an excess of either will practically guarantee that you will not get a second date.

Of course, you do not want to create the impression that you only eat certain foods you may not enjoy as much. But you should gradually introduce your less attractive eating habits to your date over time, not all at once on the first date.
