Ginger has been used for medicinal purposes such as an anti-inflammatory and an anti-emetic to prevent nausea and vomiting. Ginger may be effective in treating knee pain due to osteoarthritis. In a study published in the November 2001 issue of the "Arthritis and Rheumatism Journal," researchers R.D. Altman and K.C. Marcussen, at Miami Veterans Affairs Medical and the University of Miami, Florida, U.S., found that a highly purified standardized ginger extract significantly reduced the pain and discomfort of the knee due to osteoarthritis.
