Located in Central America, Nicaragua has a variety of Latin American foods with its own variety and flavor. Granada is a picturesque, colonial city located within Nicaragua and has become quite popular for tourists to visit and sample local Nicaraguan dishes.

Gallopinto is most famous in Nicaragua's neighboring country, Costa Rica, but is also quite popular in Nicaragua as well. Gallopinto consists of black beans, white rice and various spices.

Enchiladas found in Granada are unlike Mexican enchiladas. They consist of two thick cornmeal tortillas filled with pork, vegetables and cheese and wrapped in a banana leaf.

Chontales Cheese is a delicate treat found exclusively in Nicaragua. This cheese consists of aged cheese with live maggots inside.

Large iguanas run free around Granada, referred to as "garrobos". Fried iguana is commonly eaten in Nicaraguan homes.

Fried yucca and plantains are fried in coconut oil and served as a side dish.

Purchasing food in Granada is extremely inexpensive. With the rate of 23 Cordobas to one USD, you can find these dishes as low as 5 Cordobas from street vendors to 100 Cordobas in restaurants.
