Foods by George Gluten-free Desserts

High Quality, Gluten-free Cakes that Don't Taste like They're Specially Made for Celiacs

Racheline Maltese
Foods by George is a gluten-free bakery that produces high-quality gluten-free products that are also Wheat-Free and Soy-Free (While celiacs do not generally have problems with soy, soy is a common allergen and harmful for those on certain types of hormone therapy as well as many with migraine conditions).

One of the biggest complaints most celiacs have about gluten-free products, especially baked goods is that their texture is dry or gritty. Foods by George's gluten-free products do not have this problem, and while they are slightly less dense and more prone to crumbling than regular desserts, taste-wise they are indistinguishable from their counterparts containing gluten.

The two best Foods by George gluten-free desserts are their rich brownies, which manage to be denser than most gluten-free brownies (which tend to taste good, but be airy and unsatisfying) and their crumb cake, which ahs perfect flavor and texture despite being gluten-free and is only diminished by the fact that the crumbs (very thick, fyi) are not all that cooperative about staying attached to the baked good in question. Of course, if you're used to gluten-free desserts you're used to this sort of problem.

Foods by George achieves their great texture in gluten-free desserts by using a mix of flours including white rice, tapioca and potato. This is great not just for the texture of Foods by George's gluten-free desserts, but also for those celiacs with otherwise sensitive stomachs that can't endure too much brown rice flour (which is a common component of gluten-free products).

Unlike some allergy sensitive gluten-free products, though Foods by George do contain eggs and butter. Additionally Foods by George gluten-free products are manufactured in a facility that produces products containing tree nuts and soy - so for those who are highly sensitive to those allergy triggers Foods by George's gluten-free products may not be the best choice.

While I first discovered Foods by George Gluten-free products at Whole Foods, I have subsequently found them in the freezer case (gluten-free products spoil easily, and it is best to keep them frozen) at my local supermarket (which doesn't intentionally seem to carry any other gluten-free products).

Unfortunately, the one major drawback of Foods by George gluten-free desserts is that they are expensive - a small tray of brownies of crumb cake retails for 8 or 9 dollars, and comparable products containing gluten would probably cost about half that - or less. However, the quality of Foods by George's gluten-free desserts is high enough that they can be removed from the packaging and served to non gluten-free guests without explanation - they're tasty and attractive, which is a huge change of page from most of what's out there.
