Healthy Eating Tips for Pregnant Women

Megan Ally
Pregnancy is a beautiful and monumental time in a woman's life. Therefore, it is important for a woman to eat the right foods and get the right nutrients while she is pregnant and for her to avoid foods and drinks that could be harmful to her baby.

Why is it important to eat well during pregnancy?

Women are always told that it is important to eat correctly during pregnancy, but not all women understand why it is important. Well, I'm going to go over a brief explanation of why it is important to eat the right foods while pregnant. Anything you eat, your baby eats. If you eat ice cream and candy bars all day, your baby won't be getting any nutrients to help it grow. As a result, it is important not to consume empty calories but instead to eat healthy and nutritious foods.

What does each nutrient contribute to your body during pregnancy?

Now that you know why it is important to eat the right foods while you are pregnant, I will go over specifically what each nutrient does for you and your baby. A healthy diet is made up of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins, and water. Protein is responsible for cell growth and the production of blood. Good sources of protein include fish, poultry, beans, and eggs. Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy and a good way to obtain carbohydrates is by eating breads and pastas. Calcium helps build strong teeth and bones and promotes good nerve function. It can be found in milk, cheese, and yogurt. Iron is needed for red blood cell production and to prevent anemia. Iron can be found in red meats.

Vitamin A promotes healthy skin, eyes, and bones and can be found in carrots and leafy green vegetables. The B Vitamins are responsible for red blood cell formation, the effective use of protein, fat, and carbs, and maintaining nervous system health. They can be found in meats. Vitamin D promotes healthy bones and teeth and it aids in the absorption of Calcium. Dairy products and breads are good sources of Vitamin D. Folic acid, which is found in fruits and vegetables, is important for blood and protein production and effective enzyme function. Fat is the body's way of storing energy and can be found in meats, dairy products, and nuts. However, too much fat in a diet leads to obesity. Hopefully this has helped you understand the contributions that nutrients make to your body and your baby.

What are some foods you should avoid?

During pregnancy, some foods should be avoided in order to prevent injury or death to your baby. When pregnant, you should not eat any unpasteurized foods, such as soft cheeses. You should also avoid eating raw eggs or foods that contain raw eggs, as well as any raw or undercooked meats (including sushi). Fish that are high in mercury (shark, swordfish, and king mackerel) should also be avoided. It is also recommended that pregnant women not eat or drink anything that contains artificial sweetener.

What are some drinks you should avoid?

There are also drinks that a pregnant woman should try not to consume. If you are pregnant you should not drink unpasteurized milk or other juices. You should also steer clear of beverages that contain caffeine. Herbal teas should be avoided because they may cause contractions. Alcoholic beverages should be avoided as well. Although artificial sweeteners have not been connected to any abnormalities, most health care providers recommend avoiding drinks that have been artificially sweetened.

Are there any diets that should be avoided?

Certain diets may not be appropriate for women who are pregnant. Dieting in general should be avoided. It is natural and healthy to gain weight during pregnancy; this means that your baby is healthy. Most doctors do not recommend a vegan diet, however if it is absolutely necessary a woman can take supplements to get the additional vitamins and nutrients that she needs.

I hope this information helps in your quest to find out what to avoid during pregnancy. I have had many friends who did not eat the right way while they were pregnant, but luckily their babies were fine. Personally, I don't think it is worth the risk. You can avoid the possibility of putting your baby in danger by simply eating and drinking properly. Congratulations on the pregnancy and I hope all goes well!
