Foods for Midnight Snacking

Midnight snacking is something that most of us really enjoy. Even if we had enough to eat at dinner, we still crave to eat something at midnight. It is absolutely okay to indulge yourself in this eating habit. Do not get too hard on yourself for doing it because it is a natural part of being human. You do not have to worry about gaining weight, because the technique lies in knowing what is good for you.

If you indulge yourself in midnight snacking, you have to make sure that you are really hungry, because some people think they are hungry when they are actually just thirsty. Drink a glass of water first before getting something to eat. You also need to check your emotions first, because we all have a tendency to mistake hunger for emotions like boredom, anxiety, and stress. You can watch TV or read something first before actually eating something just to make sure that it is not just an emotion that makes you feel hungry. If it is already too late and you have started eating, you can always call your friend from the telephone.

In order to stop yourself from worrying that you might get fat or unhealthy while midnight snacking, here are some of the healthy food choices that you can choose from.

1. Brown Rice

This type of rice contains a lot of vitamins and minerals. It also contains fiber and hormones that triggers your brain to make you feel awake.

2. Nuts

Nuts are a great source of protein and are low in calories. It is known to curb hunger, making you feel fuller. Macadamia nuts have been proven to make your abs toned and flat.

3. Honey

Honey releases neurotransmitters through your body, keeping you relaxed. It also soothes sore muscles after a workout. Honey on a slice of whole-wheat toast or some green tea with honey will do wonders for your body.

4) Vegetables

Carrot sticks and celery are some of the vegetables that you can enjoy without cooking. They are not high in calories, so you should not worry about eating too much of these.

5) Fruit

Fruits like prunes or apricots are great sources of fiber. They also help stabilize blood sugars in your body. Most dried fruits have over 15 grams of sugar per serving. Remember to always check the amount of sugar in what you are eating.

There are also unhealthy foods that we love to eat during our midnight snacks. However, these are the ones that we need to limit. Here are some:

1. Cookies

Cookies are high in Trans and saturated fats. They are made of enriched-flour so therefore, you do not get any health benefits when you eat them.

2. Energy drinks

You may not want to drink this in the middle of night, because doing so will give you a boost of energy. They are loaded with too much sugar and are very high in calories as well.

3. Fried foods

These fast-food types of foods have no health benefits. They contain a lot of the bad fats and they usually lead to indigestion. There are so many foods to choose from when you are snacking at midnight. Just avoid the high-calorie and high-processed foods to make sure that you are giving what your body needs. Doing so will not only help you stay healthy; it will also give you a better night's sleep.
