Fool's Gold

Shirley Adkins
Took a walk through the desert,
Underneath the hot midday sun.
Something shiny caught my eye,
So I bent and picked it up.
A small chunk of fool's gold
Is what I held in my hand.
While I stood gazing at it,
Tears came to my eyes
As I realized, this stone
Told the story of our love.
So warm and lovely to have
Unless you hold on too tight,
Then it slowly turns cold,
Cutting straight to the heart.
Slowly I opened my hand,
Letting it fall to the ground.
Took a last look as I walked away,
Knowing that love is, nothing but
Fool's Gold.
