Foot Care for Diabetics

How to Take Care of Your Feet If You Are Diabetic

People with diabetes are more prone to foot problems. It's a simple fact. Do you know what to do to protect your feet? Here are some tips to help you keep your feet healthy.

Diabetes can lead to poor circulation which will cause a decrease in the blood flow to the lower legs and feet. This can cause nerve damage which results in pain and numbness. Many times, diabetics will suffer an injury to their feet and not even know it until it's too late. Because of the poor circulation, healing is slower than it is for a person who does not have diabetes.

Daily foot inspections are a must. Even if your feet are not hurting or numb, you need to check them every day for cuts, blisters and bruises. You also need to check them if there is any pain or discomfort. It is much better to catch an injury in time to care for it than to let it go and lead to infection that might not heal properly.

At each doctor's visit, have the doctor visually inspect your feet. Even if there is no pain, this needs to be done. And, at least once a year, your doctor should thoroughly inspect each foot. Be sure to discuss foot and leg symptoms with your doctor. You need to know what to watch for. Untended injuries can lead to infections. If these infections go untreated, it could eventually lead to amputations.

When checking your feet, use a hand mirror if you have trouble bending over. If your vision is poor, have a family member check your feet for you. If you have any cuts, scrapes, redness, swelling, heat, or pus you should watch these areas carefully. If there is any worsening of the injured area, call a doctor immediately.

Never go barefoot. Feet that are numb can be injured without you knowing about it. Proper shoes should be worn at all times to avoid unwanted injuries.

If you smoke, quit. It's very simple. Smoking decreases circulation. If you want healthy feet, you want to keep your blood circulating as best as you can. Smoking will cause complications which can also lead to amputation later.

Medicare and some insurance will cover foot and nail care for diabetics. These insurance plans will also cover special footwear if a doctor deems it medically necessary. Be sure and talk to your doctor about both of these needs.

Your feet are the foundation of your body. Without them it would be very difficult to walk, run, or play. Proper foot care is essential for diabetics. If you care for your feet now, you will reap the benefits later.
