Foot Pocket Lap Blanket

Warm Feet Blanket

Most people have different covers that they use, depending on the situation. A quilt or comforter is great for the bed but you don't want to carry it to the couch every time you want to watch television. So, you buy a fleece or knit throw that you can keep on the sofa. But then, when you wrap the throw around you, your feet are exposed and cold. So, you have to keep socks on as you cover up with the throw. What you really need is a lap blanket that features a warm, cozy pocket for your feet. It's easy to sew one for yourself or someone you love.

Purchase four and a half yards of fleece, flannel, or another warm fabric. The material you choose should be forty-five inches wide. Trim off the selvages and use the fabric, as-is, for the width. Measure halfway down the cloth and cut it in half, width-ways, so that you have two pieces of fabric which are about forty-two inches wide, each.

Lay the two pieces of material on top of each other so that their right sides are facing each other. Cut a piece of batting to be the same size as these pieces. Lay the batting on the stack, and pin the pieces together, all the way around.

Start sewing on one of the short sides of the blanket. Begin several inches from the corner, sew over to the corner, then sew around the next two corners. When you round the fourth corner, sew a few inches, then stop. This will leave an opening where you can turn the blanket. After turning the blanket right-side-out, stitch the opening shut.

At one short end of the blanket, fold it up about twenty inches, then pin it at the sides. Divide the pocket into two by pinning it down the center. Sew the two side seams and the center seam of the pocket. Back-tack at each end of each seam.

You can make it much easier to create the foot pocket lap blanket if you start with an ordinary blanket. Just cut it to the size you need, fold one end up, and sew the three seams to create the pocket.

Instead of just covering up with a throw you can tuck your feet into it, and then cover up. The foot pocket lap blanket is just a little nicer than an ordinary lap blanket and it's really easy to make.
