Football 2007-08 Season Preview: Dallas Cowboys

Bruce Bostwick
This team is going to have a new coach and will be taking over after Parcells had retired from the league. He was going for one last chance to get one more Super Bowl Ring with the Cowboys as his last team to coach for. His last game will be regarded as the one where young rookie Quarterback Tony Romo dropped the ball literally and tried to run it in the End Zone but was one yard short and that is the final play. After that, Parcells had decided to retire but that was not the reason, more so it had to do with being tired. Will that harbor over his career with that? Absolutely not in anyone's eyes and will still be regarded as one of the all-time great coaches.

The new coach is Wade Phillips, whom has a winning record in his career as a coach. His mind is supposed to be one of the great defensive minds and was the coach of the Buffalo Bills, the place he gained the most fame. But also at the same time had a controversial move with having then-Bills Quarterback Rob Johnson start instead of then-Quarterback Doug Flutie despite Flutie leading the team to the playoffs. This is the 1st time he will be coaching a full season since 2000 as Coach of the Bills. Most of his coaching career, he has been known simply as a Defensive Coordinator. Can he lead the Cowboys with a different mindset? Only time will tell on this and if he has the chemistry with the other coaches and the players adjust really well to him; that could potentially help this team out even further.

This team is perhaps the most celebrated team in history and currently has the record for the most Super Bowl Appearances with 8, a record still to do this and the 2nd highest would be 6 done by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos respectively. However, this franchise has tied the record for the most Super Bowl Victories with 5 in a three-way-tie with the Steelers and 49ers. They were regarded probably as the Team of the 1990s when they were really successful and leading the way on offense was Aikman, Smith, and Irvine. Those three have contributed when they had their big run winning 3 Super Bowl Titles in 4 Seasons. They were the 1st team to pull it off and the only other team to do such a thing would be the New England Patriots.

Gone are those days and now the question of who is going to take charge of this team. Other than that playoff start for Romo, he does have the potential to go far and help be the leader of this team. As long as Terrell Owens keeps himself from causing controversy like he has been known to do in the past with his previous teams, the 49ers and the Eagles, he can be effective and not drop the ball too much. Granted he might have had some injuries with his hand but he should know not to overdo it. Does this team have the serious potential to make yet another run for the post season and go all the way? Yes this team does.Looking at the team directly, there is a reason they are called America's Team. It has to due with many fans across the nation cheering on the Dallas team. They have done very well for themselves throughout their franchise history despite the ups and downs. They will continue to play well as long as they can do so and not have a meltdown this upcoming season. It is going to be interested to see how this competes with the Giants and also the Eagles. You could throw the Redskins their since they did the unthinkable and that was beat them in the season series last season. The draft picks may not make the difference but the chemistry will determine that in the end. A person could be the last pick of the draft and turn out to be a good player. The Cowboys can win the Division if only they prove to just be better than last year now with Romo as the leader of the team. Could he be what Troy Aikman was to Dallas in the 90s? Time will tell as his career is just starting out.
