Football Players Kill Man; Get Off with Just Assault

Luis Ramirez was Murdered by Teens in Pennsylvania, but There May Be No Justice for This Father's Death

Ryan Christopher DeVault
There is no justice for Luis Ramirez, as the news has been released that the teens who murdered him will basically get away with it. The case stems from a July 12th night when Luis Ramirez, a 25-year old married immigrant father, and a friend were walking down a street. It is debated what happened next, and it hasn't been proven exactly what took place, but in the end, Ramirez was left for dead after being beaten by 4 football players in the small town of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.

The allegations against the four teens were that they had committed aggravated assault, had used ethnic intimidation, and that the kick administered by one of the teens garnered him a charge of third-degree murder. What wasn't debated in this case was whether these small town football stars had caused the death, but rather who delivered the fatal blow against Ramirez. The underage teens were also drinking heavily on the night of their attack, and providing alcohol to other teens at a party that night. The other point not being debated, is that at the end of the "fight", Ramirez was left with severe injuries, including head injuries so severe, that his brain matter was "oozing out".

At the end of the day, the teens, Derrick Donchak and Brandon Piekarsky, were found guilty of simple assault, and not guilty on the charges of murder, reckless endangerment, and ethnic intimidation. So to sum up everything, the lawyers of the teens did not deny that the teens beat up Rodriguez, and the end result was that a white jury of 12 people didn't feel that there was enough evidence to find their town football stars guilty of murdering Ramirez. When the verdicts were read, no remorse was shown for the man that they knowingly killed, and kicked while he was already unconscious on the ground.

It is scary cases like this that tend to really shine a light on the problems between races in the country. That teens can still get away with uttering racist comments, and take things so far that a family man dies is just unforgivable. There is now a wife grieving, a family destroyed, and children without a father, simply because of teens committing crimes while breaking the law. The district attorney from that city needs to take the step to punish these teens for drunken disorderly actions, as well as drinking underage. Unfortunately though, there has been no justice for Ramirez, as it turns out the Pennsylvania town doesn't care what hooligans do in the streets when the lights go out.

I cannot believe that I missed this piece.

CJ Your comment makes no sense, a jury is selected from people all over the county (not just this town) and in fact I am sure a person from here would not even been selected. If you belong to a club or organization and someone from your organization committed a crime are you saying punish you too, even though you had nothing to do with it? Wow, that's wonderful. I do agree, if a crime has been committed you must take responsibility. It is also up to the district attorney to provide a case against the defendants, and in this matter his lead investigator did a terrible job putting it together. That's why these boys got what they got. Believe me, there is nothing more this community wants is to get fair, impartial justice and move on and try to repair the hurt to our little town.

Living Here - perhaps the small town jury let off their best players - who knows it doesn't matter if these guys played football alone or not what matters is that a town and it's residents allowed two of their own to get away with clear murder - they should all have to pay for the crime against this family.

What does football players have to do with this? They were involved in other sports and clubs as well. I for one feel bad that this has happened. But their are 30 other players on this team that had NOTHING to do with this incident, and some don't support the decison of this jury. Stop painting this entire community bad. All of us do not support these boys.

Jay, I also followed the story. I don't understand what you mean by calling this article one-sided. What's the other side?

The Foreman also said he believed they they were racists, but couldn't convict them of Ethnic Intimidation. This case will be appealed, and one of the kids already got Fed time. NO ONE should stand for this.

Who bears more guilt? The teenagers who committed murder or the system that failed to do anything about that murder?

Ok I followed this carefully since it started. What was left out is the guy dressed with a border patrol tee shirt after he killed ramirez. This article is one sided, although I do believe they murdered him. The jury forman said that some jurors mind was made up to aquit before the trial.
