Football Vs. Baseball: Which is the True Pastime?

Travis Boyer
The consensus opinion around America is that football is America's new favorite pastime. The question is how did football supplant baseball as America's favorite sport?

First, there is the duration of each game. Football is timed, but barring overtime, people can usually set their watches by the end of the game. In baseball, there is no telling how long a nine inning game will go. Both are fairly spectator friendly, but the time factor favors football.

Another factor is the quality of play. If you are watching a blowout in a baseball game, it can be pretty painful to watch depending on your particular interest in the game. However, if you are watching a blowout in a football game, there is still the chance of a potential comeback. College football is the best example of the potential for come from behind victories.

The action on the field weighs heavily as well. Football is a battle of brawn. Baseball has far more strategy involved when turning to the bullpen or when choosing a pinch hitter to send to the plate. For those who find it satisfying to second guess from the cheap seats, baseball is the perfect game for that.

In football, so much importance is put on a single game. Baseball is a marathon in that each game adds up to very little in the long run. Think of it as each football game in a 16 game season adding up to four or five baseball games.

The big play is a huge factor in any sport. In football, it could be a hail-mary pass for a touchdown or a key turnover leading to a game winning drive. In baseball, there is no bigger play than the home run. The home run is just about the biggest play in all of sports. It is majestic in its flight off of the bat, not to mention the sound of bat when a batter really connects with the ball. A deep pass for a touchdown in football could easily be broken up. When a batter connects with that ball and sends it for a ride, there really is no doubt about it.

The NFL has done a far better job keeping a connection with its fans. Currently, there seems to be a disconnect between the MLB and its fans. Issues outside of the sport come into play in both sports. Steroids in baseball clouds the validity of what the fan is seeing on the field. In football, steroids are pretty much a dead and buried issue.

Football has the overall edge in fan accessibility and quality of play on the field. Baseball has lost considerable ground over the past few years in many ways. In the foreseeable future, baseball will not catch up to football as America's number one spectator sport.

Baseball is americas past-time and it is a whole lot better than football because you run a lot more and the play is not 3 seconds long. In baseball you can run

Well im all about logic so lets be logical. Football and Baseball are two great but completely different sports.
Personally im gonna say football because i like strategy and excitement a contact.
Dont get me wrong i love baseball and its awsome but its just not as good as football in my opinion.

    1) In baseball the game is never truly over until the final out is made. In football a team can just kneel the ball.

    2) Great plays in football seemed to always be called back because of holding, horsecollar, breathing on the kicker, facemask, offsides, hitting the quarterback anywhere but the 3rd rib from the bottom as long as it isn't too hard, etc. the only penalties in baseball are runner or batter interference and those rarely come into play. There hasn't been a homerun called back since george brett's pine tar bat back in 1980.

    3) Overtime in baseball both teams get an equal chance. In football your chances of winning go down because of a coin toss. Can you imagine a baseball game where the see who gets to bat first in the 10th inning. No, you don't.

I like football but holy crap it's covered way too much. They only play once a week. Do we really need 7 nfl lives a week.

So, wait? Baseball employs more strategy because of the BULLPEN? Give me a break. Coaches plan for weeks, study film and commiserate daily over one football play and about 60 of them happen in one game on either side of the ball. Substitutions are about 5 times as common in any football game. If you want strategy, football is the game. It's superior in every respect: athleticism, strategy and management. Every baseball game is exactly the same. Football teams are asked to make major changes week in and week out.

well it depends on wither you want to see action packed and you know when it will end(football) or do ya want a guy throwing it just so another guy can hit it with a stick and you never know when it will end(baseball) football wins easly baseball can be national pastime football is national passion and it's a hell of alot more fun to watch and play

  • Baseball blows football out of the water12/14/2009

I think it basically comes down to:
    1) Do you like strategy? (Baseball)
    2) Or do you like a bunch of showboating, testosterone-pumped guys beating each other with the miniscule addition of a ball? (Football)

If you want testosterone-packed battles, watch MMA, not football. Baseball is by far the superior sport.
