Football Wives vs. Basketball Wives: Which Fan Are You?

Ayanna Guyhto
VH1 kicked off (bad pun intended) the premiere of "Football Wives"-a spin-off of the insanely popular "Basketball Wives." Most people might think that the two shows are simply carbon copies of one another-yet another vehicle to showcase exorbitant lifestyles and bad behavior. But if you caught the VH1 premiere on October 24th, you've probably noted some distinct differences between these two sports-related shows.

Wives and "Wifeys"

One of the major differences between the Basketball and Football Wives is that not many of the basketball wives are really married-a fact that is readily pointed out on gossip blogs. The Football Wives for the most part, are actual wives. Another major difference between the two shows is that the footballers actually have a presence on the show. It would seem that the NBA ladies spent a great deal of screen time exploring why the men in their lives were absent.

Miami vs. Dallas

These two filming locations have some pretty distinct differences. Miami happens to play host to a lot of different reality shows-programs that have pinpointed urban audiences. Without a doubt, this is due in part to Miami's reputation as a haven for the entertainment scene. While, both shows will certainly share a large number of fans, Dallas and its larger-than-life persona might take some getting used to. Nonetheless, after a few more episodes, it might become quite clear that the lovely ladies of the NFL are just as spicy as the courtside divas.

Sports Fans

Those watching the opening episode of VH1's "Football Wives" probably noticed that most of the ladies seem pretty invested in their husbands' sports careers. Indeed, the Football Wives appear to really love their football, while the Basketball Wives appear to be more preoccupied with the events surrounding their exes' careers. In fact, audiences rarely heard about anything taking place on the court-but rather the salacious goings on after the games.

Working Girls...

While the Football Wives look like they're dripping in money, the first episode reveals that these ladies have much more on their plates than lunching and shopping (at least so far.) The football wives are an entrepreneurial bunch that has a solid grip on where their families are financially. Yes, these ladies have degrees, their own businesses, and tons of ventures to keep them busy. One of the ladies, Bridget Pigrenet (girlfriend of David Buehler) even works two jobs to remain afloat-ensuring that she won't easily be labeled a gold digger. Sure, the Basketball Wives have lives of their own as well. But somehow their show makes "Gossip Girl" look like "Sesame Street."
