Footloose Remake

Will it Ever Become Reality?

Cindy Wright
There has been talk of a Footloose remake for a few years now. Something always seems to happen to prevent it from ever getting accomplished.

The original Footloose movie musical has become a classic. It was a 1998 film that starred Kevin Bacon. It was the story of a Ren McCormack a teenager who moved from Chicago with his family to a small town where the people of the town banned dancing and music after Revered Shaw Moore, played by John Lithgow who blames rock music for the death of his son. Ren and his classmates have to prove that music is not the corruption that the town is saying it is so they can have a senior prom.

But now there is talk of a remake. First Zac Efron was to play the character of Ren but then backed out as he did not want to do another musical. During an interview I had with Kevin Bacon he informed me Efron had backed out, something I did not know at the time of the interview. Later Chance Crawford was cast as Ren however on April 13 2010 Crawford backed out of the movie due to scheduling conflicts.

Director Kenny Ortega (Michael Jacksons This is It) was to direct the project but has also left the project due to "differences over tone and budget." Now the new director reported by Variety is Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flo). Producers are Eben Davidson, Brad Weston, Craig Zadan, Neil Meron and Dylan Sellers.

Variety also reported that the Dancing with the Stars" dancer and country singer Julianne Hough will be playing the part of the reverend's daughter. But as much as things keep changing I would not count on it.

The film is supposed to be released summer of 2011; we will just have to wait and a see if a cast gets hired and if they stick around for the actual movie to be filmed. Sometimes a classic is meant to be left alone and maybe all of these differences are an indication that Footloose should be left as is.

What do you think? Do you think there should be a remake? Do you think they should let the classic stand as is? Who do you could play the respective parts and do them justice?

Loved the original. Not sure if they should try another one.
