Footprints is a Spiritual Story We Can All Relate To

Chris Cade
Footprints is a wonderful spiritual story for anyone, regardless of personal and religious beliefs. This is perhaps the most famous spiritual story of modern times, and it is gaining in popularity every day. Here's the story, and then afterwards is some discussion:

Deep in his slumber, one night a man had a very real, yet surreal dream. He dreamt that he was walking along the beach with God. As he looked up at the sky, he saw all the scenes of his life flash by along with two sets of footprints: one set for himself, and another for God.

After all the scenes had flashed before him, he looked back at those footprints and noticed something quite disturbing: At the most difficult times in his life, he saw only one set of footprints.

This deeply troubled the man, so he turned and said to God: "You said that if I followed you, then you would always walk with me through thick and thin. In looking back, I see that during the most painful times there is only one set of footprints. Why did you leave me when I needed you the most?"

"I love you and would never leave. It was during those times when you suffered the most that I carried you."

In "Footprints", the idea that is being taught is that no person is alone at any time of day or night. We are all part of a universal presence and as such all parts of the presence support and have an effect on the other parts. Whenever someone thinks that they have to face up to some overwhelming event, they may feel totally isolated from everyone including their own family members and they may feel depressed and lonely.

"Footprints" is a reminder that the Spirit is always a part of our lives and will always be there to help us through any type of circumstance. Knowing that there is always the Spirit and greater power that will help support us and take care of us gives great comfort to everyone. The Spirit can take whatever form that someone wants to assign it, there is no one religious name or form that is better or more usable than another. The main thought to bear in mind is that whenever we need something, the Spirit is capable of providing this to us.

Spiritual stories that offer this type of lesson and teaching are able to cross over the boundaries of culture, religions and countries and are able to find homes in the heart of many around the world. One of the other meanings of this story is to help people understand that they can find the strength to face all types of adversity and need never feel abandoned or alone.

The ability to touch people all over the world is one of the reasons this story does not ever lose any of its popularity and appeal.
