Believe it or not, the most critical part of your wardrobe is your footwear. We all know how much importance women place on their own shoes...well, same is placed on YOURS. I know it's not fair, that men should not be expected to own as many pairs of shoes as their girlfriends, but sometimes it may be necessary, unfortunately. I know it seems like a crime against nature, but you may end up having...(shudders)...a shoe rack.
What you put on your feet demonstrates to a woman your maturity, ability to take care of things, and dedication. If you're wearing nice shoes that match your outfit, are clean, and are well-taken care-of, you'll do better than with the ratty pair of sneakers you throw on to mow the lawn. Nice shoes are more than just what you've got on to hide your ugly feet and protect thy toes from sharp sticks...they're somehow a symbol of your positive attitude towards commitment. Unfair, but it's an unwritten Woman-Rule.
Now, I'm not talking about dress shoes to a club, but women like it if you wear things that are a bit more mature than a pair of basketball shoes or sandals...sneakers are acceptable, they just have to be nice! Keep em clean, keep em in one piece, and make sure they go with what you're wearing. If you have a fair amount of variety in your wardrobe, this means you could feasibly have way more shoes than a man would prefer, but it does help out your chances big time. Oh, and thong flip-flops are acceptable on the beach or on the street in midsummer. Leave them at home when you go clubbing.
You have to have a pretty good selection of footwear...like it or not. This means shoe-shopping fairly regularly...which is a good thing and a bad thing. Good side: you get to go shoe-shopping with your girl. Bad side: you have to go shoe-shopping with your girl. It's all how you look at it, but how SHE looks at it is the most important. She wants your shoes nice, clean, and appropriate, and in a way they're more important than the entire rest of the outfit, although you KNOW they're looking at that, too.
So do yourself a favor. Wear nice shoes, if for no other reason than that they look good. You just may get some relationship benefits out of it, too.
