For Brian

A friend of mine once told me

Every man you meet is your potential mate.

You have the qualifications down:

You're a man and we just met today.

I didn't like what I knew of you before

But that doesn't seem to mean so much now...

You didn't approve of me, either

But now you see we were wrong...don't you?

Rumour has maligned the both of us

But they never told me about your smile

Or how your eyes laugh by themselves

When you're trying hard to be serious.

You're his friend...I understand and know

His shadow will always stand between us

But take my hand and we will turn away,

To make believe he cannot see us here.

It's been a many weary days

Since I have held him while I slept,

And now I'm lonely...are you too?

Don't listen when he tells you he still loves me.

And please don't turn your head away

When someone mentions his name to me...

Look into my eyes and you will find them clear of him

I stopped my love forhim before you came in sight.

Now it waits for someone new to wrap itself around,

Are you that special man?

Or will you merely pass me by,

With barely a pause in your rush through life?

I don't know yet, but feel a strength

A lonesome power in you...gentleness too

I need these things, a string to hold me down

I've flown too high and out of control

With men too weak to ever see the way

Now I'm afraid of crashing on the rocks.

Be there when I fall, and shelter me

I promise I'll be the one to hear when you cry in the night

Hold you close against the nightmare time

You may not need me now, today...

But you will then, of this I'm sure.

No man can stand alone against the wind forever.
