For My Brother

Coral Levang
I watched
As the nurse pushed
Mom in the wheelchair,
With you in her arms.

Dad at the wheel of the car,
I sat in the back seat.
Standing to peer over the front seat,
I looked at you for the first time.

Your tiny features, fingers and toes.
Oh, how amazed I was to see
How perfect you were,
My baby brother!

Decades have passed,
Innocence replaced with vague memories.
But as I loved you then, dear Brother,
I love you now.

What a beautiful endearing poem to your little brother, Coral! His birthday, perhaps? I relate to it, too... having 2 little brothers & one baby sis. But the point about you standing up in the back seat while the baby rode in his mama's arms up front really gives the sense of time... before seatbelt laws. I recall lying across the ledge of the rear window on long rides, pretending I was in a berth on a train. Lucky guy to have you as his loving big sister. : )
