You were not the dad
you wanted to be
You were not the dad
I wanted you to be
Through glossy, red eyes
we both hid our pain
you wanted to be
You were not the dad
I wanted you to be
Through glossy, red eyes
we both hid our pain
Before the end
we acknowledged the pain
Before the end
you knew I loved you
Before the end
I knew you loved me too
I only wish the beginning
and the middle
Were more like
the end
Another chance to get it right
I do miss you dad

You are welcome Dan, thank you for re-reading it.. I know my dad was not the only one this poem fits, too many of us had this relationship with our fathers..
This is so meaningful to me. I return to it often. Thank you, Sherri!
Your emotions are expressed well here.
Sounds like me and my dad who also is gone now.
This is very moving. I'm glad that in the end you knew your father loved you.
Excellent poem. Brought chills to the back of my neck.
This was absolutely beautiful. God bless him, and I'm sure your father is watching you, thinking about what a wonderful person you are :)
Awesome poem here. I feel every word of this, too, because our situations are similar, except now, my dad and I are actually friends.
Never having had the opportunity that you had , just made me want to become all that I wished for..You never know , until your children come forward and let you know that it was all Ok..Most Dads love you dearly...Once you get by the hard surface, you'll find out we're marshmellows..very sad piece and it speaks volumes..I'm happy that you connected.
