For Debs

How will I best remember you
When we are old
And soon to pass from this our place
To another world, an unknown life

By hysterical late night revelry
And midnight raids on ice cream parlors
Christmas parties, disco beats
Chicken curry, fashion magazines
New Wave music, Halloween,
picnics, chocolate whipped cream cakes.

Or will I see you as you are today
With disillusion dimming your warm glow
And memories of wasted dreams
Hopes and plans and female schemes
Finding the one special dress
For the one special man
On that so special night
And on the morning after we would cry
To find there are no princes left worth having.

And will I feel the tears again
Or see them in your eyes
To know we've fallen yet once more
Stumbled on the cobblestones
Scrambled through the uncut weeds.

I won't wonder why our blessings
Always were so mixed.
To reach at last a point of strength
And find ourselves alone.
Won't question why they always go,
The ones they wish would stay.
And leave us lonely once again -
Who never learn our lessons well
But look around the corners up ahead...

Well, there's always another corner.
