For Your Eyes Only: James Bond Quotes for Everyday Life

007 in Everyday Life

AC LAW
One of the things that I enjoy so much about James Bond movies is Bond's way with words; the double-entendres, and the quips and the quotes. Articles about famous and favorite James Bond quotes abound on the Internet. Just do a Google search for "James Bond quotes" and you'll come up with web pages in the hundreds from all over the world. A recent article on Associated Content, The Ten Best, Or Maybe Worst, James Bond Double Entendres of All Time was on the AC Most Popular Article's list for several weeks!

James Bond is a fantasy figure and although it's fun to imagine yourself in the role, walking into a lounge and asking for a Vodka Martini shaken not stirred or telling someone your name ala' Bond, James Bond, is no way to go through life. However, all is not lost. Here are some of the best James Bond quotes appropriate to use in everyday life. Use them in your everyday real world life if your feeling in the mood to be a bit more like James Bond.

"I thought you might"
If I had a dime for every time an anonymous someone on the other end of the phone asked me, "can I put you on hold?". I seriously think I'd be driving an Aston Martin DB-12. And it happens to every one of us. When I have to call Visa or Mastercard, or the Gas & Electric Company, or Verizon or any other of a dozen commercial or governmental institutions I always get, without fail, "can I put you on hold?". Now I know this question is just a social courtesy, but it's still annoying to be put on hold. I'm going to be put on hold whether I want to be or not and I never quite know what to say. I always wind up saying something on the polite but boring side like "sure" or "OK, sure", or "yes" or "yeah" or "mmm hmm". But why say that? When your on the phone and your asked the inevitable, almost rhetorical question, "can I put you on hold?", you can say, "I thought you might." You can say it just as James Bond said it to Villiers back at MI6 when Villiers asked Bond, "can I put you on hold?", while Bond was trying to call M from Miami Airport via cell phone in the Miami Airport terminal scene in Casino Royale.

"How do you do?"
This is the one to use when a rival, either business or social, addresses you with a social greeting like, "how ya doin'?'. One could merely respond back, "how ya doin', but that simply won't do. The Bond response in this situation is, "how do you do?",or, "fine....how do you do?", placing the emphasis on the word you. This shows your rival that you not only understand the basis of your relationship with him, but that you are not at all intimidated him, not to mention showing your rival that you have a superior command of English grammar. You can practice your delivery by watching the golf pro shop scene in Goldfinger. Goldfinger: (in an overbearing voice), "How do you do?". Bond: "How do you do?".

"I can think of something more sociable to do"
Wives, girlfriends and significant others are the source of great love, contentment and companionship in a man's life. The downside is that they can also be a source of social conflict , quarrel and frustration. In my own life, I can sometimes see some of that coming after only hearing a few of my wife's few words. It would be nice to have a better way to suggest to her alternative activities when she insists it's time to do our yearly taxes or re-paint the bedroom. Time to repaint the bedroom? What would James Bond say to that? Bond would say, "I can think of something more sociable to do". Depending on how you say it, the phrase can mean you simply don't want to do something or can convey the suggestion that perhaps some grown-up time would be a more enjoyable alternative. It's a James Bond quote from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. James Bond finds Tracy in his hotel suite with his gun in her hand. Tracy: "Suppose I were to kill you for a thrill?" James Bond: "I can think of something more sociable to do." This point of this James Bond quote is not to actually get you out of something distasteful. It's just a great James Bond line for everyday use.

"But, of course"
This phrase was used by James Bond in at least 4 different James Bond movies. For use as one sees fit I suppose.

I look at it this way. Every time I'm in the mood and successfully sneak a James Bond quote into my everyday conversation I feel a little closer to 00 status. And it takes, two. If the first time you do it, it goes:

James Bond: "Not well".

Dryden: "Well...You needn't worry. They say the second is........",

James Bond: "Yes........considerably".
