For Grandpa Joe

For my Grandpa Joe

The weekend trips I took in my youth, going to see you my mother would get this look,as if a glow had taken her over, she would get excited when we finally arrived at your door, she would hug you so tightly ..you were the one she adored.

My father spoke so highly of you to everyone he met,he smiled at the mere mention of your name, the jokes and times you two shared...there was never any shame.

I remember the stories of hunting and fishing, but serving your country you rarely mentioned, you held a look in your eyes for the service you did,you were never weak, the scars you barred...you never had to speak.

I remember crawling in your lap as your strong frame held me so sweetly,I laid my head on your chest the ticking a comfort..it was not your heart although so true, that made that sound but the pocket watch I hold so dearly now.
I remember seeing you lay there it will never leave my mind, the flag drapped over the oak that incased this great man,the tears fell with each shot...seven guns three times it felt an enternity as they folded the stars and stripes.
So often I think of you and what my children will miss out on not having you in thier lives,my oldest son bares the name that was given to you as well...Joe..it was my way of making sure that you remained and that your legacy was never forgotten, for I will always carry the same the love for you within my heart .
