Forced to Steal for Insulin

Evelyn Marcail
Christian charity lives in Fort Smith, the largest city in Arkansas. The clerk at a local convenience store was approached by a stranger Monday night who asked for money. He was attempting to rob the store for $40 dollars to buy insulin. The clerk instead gave him $40 from his own pocket. The gentlemen reportedly shook hands with the clerk and thanked him before leaving. Why did this even need to happen? Has health care gotten so outrageous that individuals are reduced to robbery? Insulin can be critical to life. Something needs to be done to ensure that people can get the medication and services they need without theft. This current incident comes on the heals of President Obama's call for healthcare reform.

"I suffer no illusions that this will be an easy process. It will be hard. But I also know that nearly a century after Teddy Roosevelt first called for reform, the cost of our health care has weighed down our economy and the conscience of our nation long enough. So let there be no doubt: health care reform cannot wait, it must not wait, and it will not wait another year." - President Barack Obama, February 24, 2009

President Obama is beginning his campaign for health care reform on June 6th. Many people have received e-mails about getting involved in a grass roots movement to support the President's agenda of health care reform. The goal is the same as in the election "Building support one block, one neighbor, one conversation at a time" with individuals serving in this support building role.

The goals of the President's health care reform have not changed. His website www.whitehouse.gov lists them for all to see.
"The Administration believes that comprehensive health reform should:
Reduce long-term growth of health care costs for businesses and government
Protect families from bankruptcy or debt because of health care costs
Guarantee choice of doctors and health plans
Invest in prevention and wellness
Improve patient safety and quality of care
Assure affordable, quality health coverage for all Americans
Maintain coverage when you change or lose your job
End barriers to coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions" http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/health_care/

In the future it is hoped that individuals will no longer be driven to robbery to care for their medical needs and the needs of their families.

I'm so glad that you wrote this story. It's incredibly important, and the kind of investigative journalism that makes this site great!

Thanks for the information about www.needymeds.com and Wal-Mart my grand parents have the same problem at the end of the month - ssi checks are simply not enough to cover the costs of living these days. My mother and Sister live with them to help with their daily needs and to help them cut back on some of the bills by each paying a good share of it, but money never seems to go far enough even in an un-traditional household like theirs. I wish your comments did not end so abruptly - I would like to hear what more you have to say!

Our society is evil. I know someone like the robber who has run out of money to buy insulin before the end of the month, and that person was covered by Medicare Part D, coverage so worthless the deductibles for the two kinds of insulin needed run about $70. If not for a donation from a friend used to purchase cheap insulin from Walmart without using the so-called "prescription coverage", it would have meant a trip to the emergency room. It's unfortunate the robber didn't know enough to go to the emergency room to demand the insulin. If the robber was uninsured, he could have tried to use a manufacturer program for free medication --see e.g. needymeds.com -- but the farce of those programs is one must have a physician fill out the paperwork, which uninsured people do not have, and after coming up with the fraudulent Part D program, people on medicare do not qualify for those programs. Somewhere is someone in this world who is deciding who lives and dies, and they want the majority of
