I agree completely with the author of "Ten Reasons Why You Should Not Buy a Ford Focus, only I'd like to add to this list making it "Eleven Reasons".
Reason #11: The faulty ignition switch. There have been many consumers that own this vehicle that had to have the ignition fixed due to a locking or freezing problem. In other words,it just simply won't turn. It starts as just a minor little problem that is solved by a jiggle or two, escalading into a hard push of the key into the ignition, to no resolution at all except a $400 bill from Ford to get it fixed. Some Focus owners aren't evenlucky enough toget a warning. One minute the car starts, the next minute they are stuck for hours on end. Ford refuses to hear about any of the complaints issued to them regarding the ignition switch.
Why not a recall when thousands of people are experiencing the same problem? Ford deems that it is not a safety issue. Of course it's a safety issue when you are stuck someplace for some odd hours. What if that place is "the wrong place at the wrong time"? If you are being followed, watched, or you just have an uneasy feeling about things, it is important for your car to start. This list can go on and on and can even possibly be endless. Regardless of all of this, it is important for your car to start period, or why have a car?
Not only are many consumers getting this part replaced by Ford after forking out hundreds of dollars thinking the problem has been resolved, the same conclusion usually ends up happening again. That's right, another locking ignition. Why is this happening? Well, come to find out that when Ford replaces this faulty ignition switch, they replace it with the exact same kind of part. These Focus owners don't just end up with the bill to resolve the ignition issue. You have to also take into consideration the wasted hours being stuck, the price of towing, the plans for alternate transportaion, missed day(s) of work, and not to mention, the headaches and stress that go along with all of this.
After numerous more complaints to Ford, Ford still will not recognize this as a problem. If it's not a problem, then why is there a class action suit against Ford based out of California? After some research on the internet, there are even some consumers stating that they have a warranty with Ford for their vehicle. It is said that Ford's reply was that the ignition switch is not covered under the warranty.
So, if you still decide to buy one of these vehicles, or if you already own one, and this happens to you, believe me, Ford will not hear your cries for help or resolution. Do what I did. Call your local mobile locksmith. I'm sure at least one of them has heard of the problem. Ours fixed three others the week before fixing ours. They will replace your ignition for the fraction of the cost, and most of all, NO FORD PARTS. The whole job only takes about 30-45 minutes vs. hours at the mechanics, and they come to you!

Post a CommentSame thing happened to me today. I drove to work and at 5 I went to my car only to find the ignition locked up. I thought someone was playing a practical joke and switched keys on me at work. My wife had to pick me up and my car sits waiting for help. I like the ideo of a locksmith. I'll give it a try in the morning. I smell class action. I think when the lawyers do their due dilegence(SP?) they will find Ford has know about this for years.
I have lots of issues with my Ford Focus... this isn't one of them. Hopefully it remains not one of them!!!
