Forever Friends

Kimberley Linstruth-Beckom
She still couldn't shake the previous night's dream. Rain was just a guy she met at the local haunt the other night. He couldn't mean anything more than that to her, but these dreams of past times continued to plague her mind like a disease.

Autumn always liked Egypt and the pyramids, but had never been, and certainly not with the perfect stranger she had just met. Oh, but perfect he was, she thought. His coal black hair glistened in the strobe lights. And his dimpled cheek could brighten even the darkest areas of the bar that night. She hoped that those dimples wouldn't become part of her past like the scene she had in her dreams.

The sound of the buzzer from her alarm broke her train of thought. It had been a long time since she woke before her alarm clock. The deposition had been really getting to her as of late. She didn't particularly like slum lords before this case touched her desk, but now, she was trying to find new words in her Thesaurus to replace the word hate.

Autumn didn't want to allow her thoughts of Rain to fade, but she had to get up sometime within the next few minutes if she had any hope of making the Metro North Subway to get to work. She slithered out of bed and headed for the shower. As she stepped in, she allowed the water droplets to consume her as her thoughts wandered again.

The walls were etched with hieroglyphics, and the queen like figure sent the slave to her quarters to be with her own man. Did things like that really happen? Were slaves allowed to marry? This is silly, she thought, this dream couldn't possibly have happened. The queen's face came into full view of Autumn's memory again for the thousandth time. It was a familiar face, round, with high cheek bones, full lips, and black pearl like eyes. The face was her own. Could she have been a queen in Egyptian times with Rain by her side as the king? Autumn shook her head to try and clear away her thoughts of the dream. Shaking her head didn't help her much these past couple of days, but it did give her a sense of comfort that she was doing something. Friday evening was coming up again in just a few short hours and her lawyer friends would want to visit the bar tonight. She wondered if Rain would show up.

"You look familiar, but I can't place from where." Autumn found herself embarrassedly saying.

Rain replied with a smile, "You will remember soon enough."

What could that mean? Autumn thought.

The evening came to a close and Autumn went home. She set her alarm to her usual Saturday morning yoga class and then went to bed.

A mist started to form and Autumn could see streams of light shoot over the rock she was behind. Rain was holding her cheek. "We have to do this. There is no other way. He's too powerful for us here. Perhaps the 21st century will be kind to us." Rain took out of his pocket what looked like a knife. It had a beautiful onyx stone on its pearl colored handle. He slid the knife across the palm of his hand, revealing a crimson red. He kissed Autumn while whispering, "There is no other way." Autumn felt a prick in her hand and then Rain clasped it reciting an ancient tongue. Crimson trickled down their arms and then the image of the two faded as quickly as it came.

Autumn turned over in bed and woke while shutting her alarm. This dream was even more bizarre. She had to know the truth, and today. She reached for her evening purse and pulled out Rain's cell phone number. She text a short "meet me for coffee at Java Max, 10 AM sharp." Within what seemed like seconds, a "K" appeared on her cell screen.

The shop was unusually busy for the late morning hours. A bell to the door announced of a man dressed rather peculiar. He had on long black trench coat. The crowd seemed to quite their roar when his cowboy boots touched the floor.

Autumn had never seen him before, although, a chill of familiarity stung her neck as she watch him order. His dark eyes were too piercing for her comfort. The man walked out with his shot of espresso while Rain walked in. Their eyes met for an instant and Autumn could see the distaste for the man in Rain's eyes.

"You now know, don't you, forever friend?" Rain stated. Autumn's Witch blood boiled and her soul stirred. She couldn't believe she had to become a vampire hunter, again.
