Forget Matt Lauer-

Where in the World is Common Sense?

Ann-Marie Goldstein
There are many things in this world we live in, at least here in this country, that leave me pondering the why's and wherefore's of it all.

Where to start, I ask myself. Some of what I write may not be for you, but it is overall a question of common sense.

Marijuana is illegal in most states. Fine, no problem. How I wished I lived in California! I'm from Jamaica where I could smoke if I wanted to from the time I was young. It hasn't made me crazy yet. But that's not the thing. It may be illegal, but if that is the case WHY is it okay to purchase a "water bong", a glass pipe, rolling papers and the like AND pay sales tax to the government on said purchases when the object of your affection, that which you are buying these things to use with, are illegal?! How does that make any sense at all?

WHY is there antibacterial soap? Does this mean that the soap my grandparents and even myself used twenty years ago didn't really make me clean after all? And if so, can I start a class action lawsuit over it?

Why was it okay for lenders to make loans that they KNEW would help bring about one of the greatest times of hardship that this country has ever seen and why has no one filed a class action lawsuit against them?

Why is it that in the state of Nevada, where I live, where we have the number 1 foreclosure rate in the country- we are STILL building huge houses everywhere you look. On one side of the street you see 5 story homes being built, each one right on top of the other with no room at all between them- yet on the other side of the street in the same development you will see house after house, rows of them, with foreclosure signs on them. Why? I don't understand that logic! When will someone say to the developers enough is enough? And whatever happened to energy conservation? This is Las Vegas- heat rises- some of these houses sport 3 or 4 huge airconditioners yet people complain about their rising electric bill.

Why is it that here you have to pay untold sums of money to get licensed for a job that wants to pay you ten dollars an hour? And failing paying you ten dollars an hour, they want you to work and work and work 12 hours a day for 30 % of what you actually make. How are people supposed to make ends meet? It is just not possible.

I truly hope that once Barack Obama is elected that he will restore the most important thing that this country needs. A good stiff shot of CONFIDENCE. As consumers who have gotten the short end of a very long stick for far too long, we need someone who can pull us up, who can give this country and our citizens a better vision for the future and renewed hope that all is not truly lost. Maybe then we can start to make sense of antibacterial soap.

Either that or I wash my hands of the whole thing.

  • Why is it okay to purchase drug paraphernalia, pay taxes on it, yet the drugs are illegal?
  • What does antibacterial soap really do anyway? Does this mean soaps from years ago didn't clean me?
Alcohol is legal in all states and yet it is one of the major causes of accidents in this country.
