Forgot Your Administrative Password? How to Access Your PC Anyway

A Tutorial on Accessing Your Computer If You Lose Your Administrative Password

The Armchair Geek
Forgetting a password is one of the most annoying yet preventable problems you will face with your computer - particularly if it is your administrative password. Trying to figure out your password can consume many precious minutes that you would otherwise use to perform more productive tasks. Some people have to reformat their hard disks just because of a forgotten password!

Chances are, you would prefer not to re-install your whole operating system because of a measly password. The main reason for this is all the invaluable data you would lose by doing this. Luckily, and contrary to popular belief, there are several ways to access your computer despite having forgotten your password.

The first method you could use to access your computer is also the simplest. If you have forgotten your administrative password, you can still access the computer by logging on to another administrative account on your computer. Simply log on to the account and change the password through the alternate administrative. This is the reason why why it is a good idea to create at least two administrative accounts when you buy a new computer.

A second means by which to access your computer is by disconnecting your hard drive and reattaching it on another computer as the slave drive. With this method, you can access files stored on the account with the forgotten password.

The third way you can access your account in spite of a forgotten password is to reset the password using third-party software. Before you do this, however, you have to make sure your computer does not use any type of encryption. The most common encryption especially for Windows XP is the Windows XP Encrypting File System, or EFS.

For this purpose, one of the best tools for resetting your administrative password is the Petter Nordahl-Hagen's Offline NT Password and Registry Editor. This program modifies the encrypted password in the SAM file (This is located in the registry). It allows you to access accounts in Windows NT, 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, as well as Windows Vista. You can write the image file to a CD and then use this compact disk to access NTFS partitions. You can set a new password without knowing the old password.

Simply download the program from here and create a CD image as mentioned above. You can use this CD as a bootable disk to reset your password.

Hey, I also got locked out of my computer last month. I tried several free software. It took me THREE days and got quite messy. Unfortunately none of them work for me. Finally I made it work with "password genius". The good news is that it works. The bad news is it is not free. And here is another choice:http://www.windowspassword-recovery.com/.  you can chose one to fix your problem.

If you don't want to reformat your system, I think you have to make a rest disk or use some tool to do all the job for you. Such as Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0. Burn a boot CD with the program, and insert it into the problem computer and your password will be reset to "Blank". http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com
