Forgotten Christmas: A Christmas Poem

Kathleen Devanney
A clamoring of shoppers

Echoed in the cathedral-like

Mall

Children sang in choir

Their desire for

Something More!

Through celestially decorated halls

Of angels and reindeer

Christmas splendor cranked

Into full and glittered gear

A tired Santa-for-hire

Lifted a child on his lap

As parents poised their camera

Waiting for the shot

The boy relayed to Santa

Christmas wishes from the heart

Of Madison Ave executives

Unwittingly, playing his part

Santa smiled and listened

Though his mind began to sour

How would he make the rent this month

At a mere $10 bucks an hour?

The camera clicked

A flash went off

And so too, the boy

Replaced by yet another

In search of another toy

In all the bustle of Christmas

This season of such cheer

A voice still calls out softly

In silence, if we would only hear

Christmas isn't something

You open in a box

Or stash under a tree

Or stuff inside a sock

Christmas is a remembering of

A timeless wisdom contained within

That we are one in Spirit

Forgetting this our only sin.
