Joya Williams and two other co-conspirators/defendants named Ibrahim Dimson and Edmund Duhaney had conspired together to sell Coca Cola's secrets for at least $1.5 million or to the highest bidder. Williams finally admitted to stealing all types of material from Coke such as documents and samples of Coke products. She then turned the materials over to Ibrahim Dimson and Edmund Duhaney.
Coca Cola was unaware of any issues with Ms. Williams until they were contacted by Pepsi in 2006 saying that they had received a letter offering the materials to the "highest bidder" says the Associated Press via court documents and statements. This lead to an undercover investigation by the FBI to uncover what was going on inside Coca Cola.
"This has been a very defining moment in my life. I have become infamous when I never wanted to become famous." Ms. Williams then proceeded to ask Judge Owen Forrester to show mercy in her sentence.
During the trail Ms. Williams would not admit that she did anything wrong. She stated during the trail that she had done nothing wrong, but finally took responsibility for her actions in a statement to the court before sentencing. She stated to the court "Your honor, I have expanded my consciousness through this devastating experience," she continued to say
The Associated Press states that during the trail Ms. Williams attorney's said that she had no prior criminal history. However at the hearing prosecutors uncovered that Williams had indeed been convicted on two separate occasions for other crimes.
Co-defendant Ibrahim Dimson was sentenced to 5 years in prison for his role in the conspiracy. The other co-defendant Edmund Duhaney will be sentenced at an unknown later date for his part in the crime.
