Former LSU Golfer David Toms Wins Crowne Plaza Invitational

(FT. WORTH, TX) David Toms, a former LSU golfer comes from three strokes behind to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Colonial.

Toms is fresh coming off a loss last week in \The Players Championship, but made up for it today in tying a PGA Tour record for 36-hole scoring in the Crown Plaza Invitational today.

Toms was seven strokes ahead at one point in the game on Saturday, but watched the lead slip away to Charlie Wi. Toms quickly made up the strokes on Sunday, winning the match and marking a place in history by tying a PGA record.

Wi built an early lead on Sunday, but Toms tied him up on the 10th hole at 13 under par. The pair traded birdies, Toms on 14 and Wi on the 16th hole. Toms had a one stroke advantage going into the 18th hole where his ball came to rest 22 feet from the 18th hole. Toms two-putted for a winning par.

Toms, 44, is an LSU graduate and a former All-American golfer. Playing a pivotal role in both golf programs at LSU, he helped renovate the LSU University Club Golf Course. Toms also has a men's golf tournament named after him that is played at LSU.

The win today marked the 13th victory of Toms on the PGA Tour and his first in five years. Toms tied the PGA record on Thursday and Friday by firing consecutive rounds of 8-under-par 62, tying the PGA's 36 hole record.

Toms took home $1,116,000 for winning the Crowne Plaza Invitational today. The win also moved him up to fourth on the PGA Tour's season long playoff competition, The FedEx Cup.

Toms was the runner up in last week's Player's Cup, winning $1,026,000 for the second place spot. The win today brings Toms record to 13 wins since joining the PGA in 1992. He has had 97 top ten finishes in 503 starts. Toms is now ranked No. 7 in all time career earnings in the PGA, with a total of $36,189,421.
