Former NY Giants TE Jeremy Shockey Released

Tight end Jeremy Shockey will not be a member of the New Orleans Saints whenever the current NFL labor dispute is settled.

Sources have confirmed that the former New York Giants tight end was released by the Saints on Tuesday. According to the reports, this was a salary move more than anything else. Shockey would have earned over $4 million with the Saints in what is almost guaranteed to be an NFL season that has a salary cap. It also doesn't hurt that New Orleans has two suitable replacements for the oft-injured tight end.

For what it's worth, Shockey has more total receptions than New York Giants starting tight end Kevin Boss over the last three seasons. With that said, Boss has 16 touchdown catches since 2008. Shockey has six. Boss, like Shockey, has dealt with injuries over the past couple of seasons and it is currently unknown if he will return to the Giants this fall. The Giants are not offering contracts to any of the team's current free agents, Boss included, until a new CBA is in place

Regardless of where Kevin Boss plays next season, it is highly unlikely Jeremy Shockey will be wearing a (Big) blue jersey in 2011. His departure from the team was public and ugly, and head coach Tom Coughlin and quarterback Eli Manning, among others, have definitely moved on.
