Former Police Officer Bobby Cutts on Trial for 2 Counts of Murder

With former police officer Bobby Cutts going on trial today to answer for allegedly killing his girlfriend Jesse Davis and their unborn child, character witnesses have come forward by way of Good Morning America. Bobby Cutts' ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of his child, told Good Morning America that she knew Bobby Cutts to have a dark side and that he had abused her throughout their relationship. This type of situation always arises in high profile murder cases and especially those that involve those who are here to protect and serve our communities.

Whether a person has a good or bad attitude concerning law enforcement, society also must remember that at the end of the day, these officer's are people like us who have families and other issues beyond that of their duties on the job. The have an image to protect and it makes interesting news when someone is able to shatter that image. Unfortunately, this is not a good thing when it comes to prosecuting the case.

As a criminal justice graduate, I know if I were appointed to a jury that I would have to be fair, carefully listening to every detail of the evidence that is in front of me. Whether a person is bias previous to being selected for a jury trial should be recognized while screening the potential pool.

However, on a layman's level or on a common sense level, the allegations of his previous girlfriend may have no bearing in a person's mind if they chalk it up to "another woman scorned." In addition to this, we must also consider the factor that yeah, maybe it did happen and sometimes people's chemistry just does not match and they may argue or not get along as well as the next couple.

The one thing that needs to be stated after hearing or reading information like this is that nothing that the media reports should be taken at face value, even if the information is from a reliable source. In my mind, unless I saw it or can be shown through evidence that the possibility is there that it may have happened than I would not make a prior judgment.

Although he is held to a much higher standard than that of a regular citizen, Bobby Cutts still should receive a fair and just trial as our Constitutional Rights promise. Bias on whether or not he is guilty or not should be left outside of the courtroom door. While the reports of the ex-girlfriend are concerning, Bobby Cutts history will almost positively be admitted into trial anyways where more fact than fiction is offered to the jury so they can secure a proper conviction.
