Oral Roberts University was founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1963 by Oral Roberts, a famed televangelist who frequently held charismatic faith and healing crusades. The school and its founder have been the highlight of national attention in the past, usually involving financial difficulties or allegedly heretical charismatic doctrines. In the late 80s, founder Oral Roberts threatened that God would kill him if he didn't raise enough money to build his most recent project. Oral's son, Richard Roberts, became President of the University in 1993 in a move that many hoped would ease the school's financial difficulties.
Three professors from ORU's History, Humanities, and Government department held a press conference Tuesday morning, October 2nd, about a lawsuit they are filing against Oral Roberts University, President Richard Roberts, Dr. Mark Lewandowski, Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Wendy Shirk, Dean, and Dr. Jeff Ogle, ORU Vice Provost of Academic Advancement.
The three recently-fired professors are Dr. John Swails, previously a 14-year tenured professor and chairman of the ORU History, Humanities and Government Department, Dr. Tim Brooker, ORU professor for 6 years and coordinator for ORU's Government program, and Dr. Paulita Brooker, ORU professor for 4 years. They were each allegedly fired for voicing concerns about ORU's inappropriate involvement in Tulsa's recent mayoral race.
Early in the spring semester of 2006, students in ORU's government department were coerced into campaigning for Randi Miller, a close friend to the sister of Lindsay Roberts (wife to ORU President Richard Roberts). Emphasis on promoting Randi Miller's campaign came from top administration officials, a violation of ORU's 501(c)(3) non-profit (and tax-exempt) status.
Brooker and Swails, both involved with the History, Humanities, and Government Department, apparently voiced concerns and disagreements with the situation. Both Dr. Tim Brooker and Dr. Paulita Brooker were both fired before the 2007 Fall Semester started.
Apparently a lawsuit was soon in the works and Dr. John Swails wanted to warn President Richard Roberts and other administration officials that they needed to resolve the problem. When Swails was unable to get through to President Richard Roberts about the situation, he allegedly spoke to several members on the Board of Regents (an outside governing body for the University), including Billy Jo Daugherty, Kenneth Copeland, and John Hagee. Later that afternoon, August 28th, 2007, Swails was escorted out of class while he was teaching and subsequently fired and removed from campus. The reason given at the time was "inefficiency with paperwork."
Since then, all three former professors have assembled a team of lawyers from the Tulsa-based Richardson Law Firm to file their lawsuit against Oral Roberts University, President Richard Roberts, and the three administrators. The Law Firm says it can prove "numerous serious and wrongful misuses and abuses of ORU assets by President Roberts." In addition, the lawsuit brings up the issue of ORU's violation of its tax-exempt status during the 2006 Tulsa mayoral campaign. The claim also states that at least one of the professors reported incidents of sexual harassment to the Board of Regents and that this contributed to the wrongful termination.
The entire lawsuit is available in a PDF document online. Within the document are many more allegations including: tremendous personal expenses used exclusively for the Roberts family but paid for by the Oral Roberts University and Oral Roberts Ministry budgets, illegal and inappropriate conduct by the Roberts' daughters and their friends (including vandalism, theft, and underage drinking) that has been sanctioned and covered up by Richard and Lindsay Roberts, ORU dormitories being extensively remodeled for the exclusive use of Roberts children and their friends, over $50,000 of clothing purchases for Lindsay Roberts paid by ORU and ORM budgets, text messages sent by Lindsay Roberts to underage males between 1 AM and 3 AM using cell phones paid for by the ORU and ORM budgets, University employees required to complete homework assignments for the Roberts children to turn in to Victory Christian School, and ORU security personnel running personal errands for the Roberts family while on ORU payroll and using ORU funds.
In response, ORU has made an official statement: "It is important for ORU students and their families, faculty and staff, alumni, partners as well as the general public to understand that this lawsuit is largely premised upon a compilation of incomplete statements, unsubstantiated rumors and innuendos. ORU will address these allegations through the legal process."
Also, ORU held an impromptu all-school required chapel service Monday evening, October 1st. There, President Richard Roberts announced that a lawsuit was being filed against the University and he said that he wanted to tell students before they heard rumors about it first. Following the announcement, one current student said they were led in prayer, "about how no weapon formed against us will prosper and that we are to pray for those who persecute us."
As a graduate of ORU, I've had classes with two of the three professors involved and I remember when one of the girls' dormitories was renovated for invitation-only occupation by the Roberts' daughter, Jordan, and when the Randi Miller campaign was first promoted at an all-school required attendance chapel meeting. I can say that each of ORU's academic departments and their professors strive to provide the best education possible for their students. Unfortunately, even before this fresh scandal and lawsuit, I couldn't say the same about ORU's administration, the Roberts family, or the Oral Roberts Ministry.
Several famous graduates of Oral Roberts University include: Kenneth Copeland, Kathie Lee Gifford, Ted Haggard, Ron Luce, and Carlton Pearson.

Post a Commentsksg, you propose some good ideas for what ORU students should do. But I really think most of them are more focused on their education than on making a scene. If you read today's news, Richard Roberts decided to step down, so something obviously worked and there's no more need for student involvement besides participating with any legal authorities and letting the investigation run smoothly. A protest isn't a bad idea, but I think it would require the universal knowledge and support of the students and I don't think they're all completely certain, especially the part about Lindsay's potential sexual involvement. About Kathie Lee Gifford, if you type her name and Oral Roberts University into Google, all her bio's say she attended for a few years and then dropped out.
Hi Clyde, ....don't know about the KLG thing; but nice football pun or is it punt. Anyway, I challenge all the Fred Creek protestors to bring their public protest to the campus for a more impactful result. This is the NFL of protest. Can you bring it? Follow the example of the Virginia High School students who walked out of class and demanded that the School Board send prof. cleaning services to rid the school of the deadly staph infection that killed one of the students. Top notch kids. Congrats to the parents for raising up such bold young adults. You guys rock!! No Whining...Just Action!! YES!
Thank you Adam for your response. (For some reason I can't get the post comment to appear on the other blog, so I'll reply here.) Yes, your answers are clear and I thank you for your honestly. Can I ask another question, what about now? Why don't the students get organized in a righteous and Christ-like fashion, walk out of their classes and step out on the campus and unite against these abuses. Adam, we both know this would have a huge impact for the glory of God. The message to all who abuse the Body of Christ will be heard around the world. If the motive is about restoration and reconciliation for the whole body and not about airing dirty laundry, this kind of effort will be very positive. "ORU Students Unite and Make Their Voices Heard."
Hi again. I've been observing the discourse between Charisse and Adam and something occurred to me. Adam, I think what Charisse is trying to say is that the people of God should stop playing the victim. (See my comments on your other awesome article.) I have to agree with her position. I believe that the governing board of ORU are complicit in all the cover up, but I also believe that Mr. Brooker or any of the other people who witnessed such abuses should have stood up immediately. If we want this kind of thing to end, this is what we'll need to do.
"Make your words soft and tender, lest you should later be obliged to eat them."
Speak the truth, the whole truth, and where possible bring proof. A "soft and tender" lie may be edible, but you will still need to digest it.
Liza..you are a very wise woman and had some very wise words to say. Oral's house was never ostentatious...my dealings with him during my stint as a nanny for RR & Lindsey were among the only positive moments I had. Oral is not the problem....it is his son! And just because he is Oral's son does not mean that he is the best man to follow in Oral's steps. I have always thought that the only reason RR even came back to ORU after rebelling from his father was because he saw $$$$$$$'s. I don't believe he has the same annointing (or any annointing for that matter) as Oral. His way of getting people to give money is not from God. It is pure manipulation....the biggest form of ungodliness. I too agree that the best thing and memories I have taken from my time at ORU was the friends and the relationships I formed with the professors who really really do love ORU and love the students.
As A '76 ORU grad, I didn't witness any excesses during that time; we went to OR's house- a nice ranch with a pool, but not ostentatious. But I can see how RR would fall into excess; how can you trust a guy who divorces his wife for no real reason; who didn't even graduate from ORU- not trained in either theology or business, and uses the phrase "God told me.." to give himself credibility. I loved ORU because of the people there (profs and students)- although I never agreed with "God is my source;plant a seed;expect a miracle." You don't give to get something back from God. I applaud the profs for speaking out - I daresay they are listening to God more than RR is!
Also Kathie Lee did NOT graduate from ORU; (or any other univ.)
Truth247.....as a ORU alumni and former nanny.....i can attest to the truth in some of these accusations...but accusations imply that they are non-truths being told...these are not non-truths....they are truths. I know from my time as a live-in nanny (yes I actually lived in their home with them and cared for their 3 children) the things I saw and experienced....well....somethings NEVER change.
No surprise here..."absolute power corrupts absolutely"...in politics or religion. Ilook forward to justice being served and Mr. Roberts losing his tax-exempt status. Ms. Linday needs to get a dose of reality and get a real job and live within her means. $50,000 budget for her wardrobe? C'mon, sounds like somebody's got their hand in the cookie jar.
I went to ORU for two years, my time there was horrible. I was pulled into the Dean's office for having a bible study on the campus. (There was about 10 or us) And because no one in our Bible study was a RA or Chaplin then we were told that we can not have it. I am just wondering if anyone who has gone to Oral Roberts and have had connections with the Roberts family if the stuff about Lindsey Roberts texting underage males has any truth in it?
