Former Senator Alan Simpson Apologizes to the Older Women's League (OWL) After Calling Social Security a Milk Cow for Greedy Geezers

Simpson Said "Greedy Geezers" on Social Security Live the High Life

Ashley Carson, executive director of OWL (The Older Women's League) blogged on the Huffington Post that she was concerned, very concerned.

She is worried about former Wyoming Senator Alan Simpson, co-chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility and Reform Commission established by President Obama. Simpson's solution to the deficit, is to reduce Social Security Benefits.

Ms. Carson blogged that Alan Simpson was saying that the Gray and Pink Panthers are the only ones worried about cutting Social Security benefits, and that most of the "old geezers" on Social Security are happily living the highlife. This certainly is not true.

She reported that

• The average American on Social Security receives $13,900 annually.

• The average older woman receives less than $11,000

• If benefits are cut, older adults, people with disabilities, widows and children who have lost their parents will suffer.

She said that just because Simpson himself and others like him don't need SS benefits, for many seniors Social Security will be their only income.

She suggested that any seniors who do not need Social Security donate their benefits to homeless shelters because that is where many single elderly women will end up if their benefits are reduced. Few seniors can survive on less than $11,000 a year. She accused Simpson of ageism and sexism.

Simpson replied to Ms. Carson's blog with vulgar comments regarding her concerns for seniors as "crap," and saying that today, Social Security has reached the point where it is like a "milk cow with 310 million udders, except he used the other word for udders beginning with the letter " t" and ending with "its." He said most seniors on SS live the high life.

He told her to call him when she "got honest work."

Groups such as OWL, NOW, AARP and Social Security advocacy groups, as well as various liberal politicians reacted angrily to his remarks and demanded that he resign or be fired from his position as leader of the National Commission of Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.

Under pressure and perhaps rethinking his words, Simpson sent a letter of apology to Ms. Carson. He basically gave her credit for her worries regarding the financial security of retired women. He suggested both he and Ms. Carson meet sometime to discuss her "sincere concerns." He said he had made a doozy of a mistake, and had "stuck his size 15 foot in his mouth" when he wrote that message to Ms. Carson and hit "send."

Ms. Carson has accepted his apology, but wants him to resign. He has not resigned and has not been fired.

There has got to be a better way to reduce the deficit than cutting Social Security benefits for the elderly. Let grandma keep her $800 a month. She earned it.

I get sick and tired of these sort of creeps. I remember as a boy the pampered rich banging on about social security scroungers - yet they had probably never done a hard day's work in their entire lives.

How rude and disrespectful!! He does not deserve his position on the Board and needs to be fired.

I am so tired of people blurting what they really feel, only to say they did not mean it! He meant every vulgar word he said...ho needs to go! Screw him! Good report! Hope the whole world reads it!
